Amit Pangal is an Indian Amateur Boxer born on 16th October 1995. Pangal is a native of Haryana and hails from Mayna village in Rohtak.


Amit Pangal - Early Life, Family & Background


Amit Pangal’s father Vijendra Singh Pangal is a farmer. Pangal was galvanized by his elder brother Ajay Pangal to take up boxing. Ajay Pangal is a former amateur boxer and he currently serves in the Indian Army. In 2007, Amit Pangal joined Sir Chotturam Boxing Academy in Rohtak to fulfill his dream of becoming a boxer one day. He was trained under Anil Dhankar.


Ajay Pangal too wanted to become a boxer but his father could only afford the training of either of his sons. Thus, Ajay gave up his dream of becoming a boxer and insisted Amit take up boxing.


Amit Pangal is working as Joint Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army. He is serving in the 22nd Battalion of the Mahar Regiment.


Amit Pangal Biography


12-year-old Amit Pangal was strong, determined, and resilient. He would fearlessly take on his much older boys. Amit Pangal 1st achievement came in 2010 after he won the Gold medal in sub-junior nationals at Maharashtra at the age of 14. Pangal’s elder brother Ajay Pangal finally decided to let go of his boxing dream after watching his younger brother climbing up the ladder of success and joined the Indian Army in 2011.


Amit Pangal moved to Combat Boxing Club at Gurgaon after his coach Anil Dhankar was transferred there. After being groomed and nurtured by his coach, Amit began to dominate at the junior levels. Amit Pangal was promoted to senior-level after his success at the junior level. After being promoted to senior level, he made an impact by winning the Gold medal in his debut appearance at National Boxing Championships in 2017.


In February 2018, Amit Pangal won his 1st International Gold medal at the Strandzha Cup, which he defended in 2019.


Amit Pangal Achievements


After winning the Gold medal at National Boxing Championships in 2017, in the same year, Amit Pangal won his 1st international medal by clinching Bronze in the light heavyweight category in his debut international event at Asian Amateur Boxing Championships and got entry into the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships, where he was defeated by Uzbekistan's Hasanboy Dusmatov in the quarterfinal round.


At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, Amit Pangal won a Silver medal in the light flyweight category. He was pitted against the eventual Gold medalist British Boxer Galal Yafai. 4 months later, Amit Pangal had won his 2nd International Gold Medal at the 2018 Asian Games by avenging his quarter-final defeat to Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan at the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Due to his success at the 2018 Asian Games, Pangal was bestowed with the Arjuna Award by the Government of India on the recommendation by the Boxing Federation of India.


In 2019, Pangal won his 4th international Gold medal at Asian Boxing Championship by defeating South Korean pugilist Kim-in-Kyu. In September 2019, Amit Pangal became the 1st Indian pugilist to clinch the Silver medal at AIBA World Boxing Championships after being defeated by Uzbekistan’s Shakhobhidin Zoirov in the 52 kg category final.


Amit Pangal qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in March 2020 after he had defeated Carlo Palaam of the Philippines in the quarterfinal of the 52 kg category. After he was qualified for his debut Olympic Games, Amit Pangal won his 5th international Gold medal at the 2020 Boxing World Cup in Cologne, Germany in December. Amit has a total of 5 International Gold medals under his belt and he is India’s strong hope for a medal at Olympics in boxing.
