Augusto Fernandez: A Brief Biography

Augusto Matías Fernández is an Argentine professional football player who currently plays for Beijing Renhe and the Argentina national team as a midfielder.


He was born on 10 April 1986 in Pergamino, Argentina. He plays the role of a central midfielder.


Debut


Fernández made his full international debut in international football for Argentina on 15 September 2011 against Brazil in home draw of Superclásico de las Américas.


On 2 June 2014, he was named in the final squad for FIFA World Cup 2014 but got no playing time during the whole tournament.


Then in May 2016, he was in the 23-man Argentina squad for the Copa América Centenario tournament where he was mostly a starter except for missing the final against Chile because of an injury he picked up in the semifinal.


Club career


Fernández started his career in club football with River Plate in 2005. He debuted with the team on 29 January 2006 as a substitute for Jonathan Santana in a 5–0 away win over Tiro Federal.


He then scored his first professional goal on 8 April 2007 that resulted in a 1–1 home draw against Belgrano. He made a total of three goals in his youth career from his 46 appearances in total for the club.


On 28 August 2009, he was loaned to the French club Saint-Etienne. On 13 September 2009 he made his Ligue 1 debut in a 0–1 loss at Stade Rennais. He scored his first goal for the club in October in a 3–1 home win against FC Girondins de Bordeaux.


On 9 July 2010, Fernández signed a three-year deal with Vélez Sársfield club for a deal worth of US$ 1.5 million. He totalled 58 games and 11 goals for the club.


Fernández joined newly promoted La Liga club Celta de Vigo on 8 August 2012 as a result of a four-year deal. He made his debut on 18 August 2012 in the match against Málaga CF which was a 0–1 home loss. On 22 September 2012 he scored his first goal in a 2–1 home win over Getafe CF.


Fernández joined Atlético Madrid on 1st January 2016 by signing a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee. He made his debut on 6th January 2016 against Rayo Vallecano in a away draw and on the 11th of January he made his first league appearance for the club against his first team Celta.
