Chinglensana Singh: A Brief Biography
Chinglensana Singh Kangujam is an Indian hockey player who was born on December 2, 1991 in Manipur. He plays as a half-back for the Indian hockey team. He is regarded as one of the best Hockey players to thrive out of Manipur region. He is popularly known as ‘Chinglen’.
Background
Chinglen’s was introduced to Hockey when he was eight, back in 1999, when he went to watch the 5th National Games hosted by Manipur.
He got a few years of guidance from Legends like Brojen Singh and then in 2006 he got a chance to show his talent in the Nehru Society Tournament, in the U-17 category in Delhi.
His talent was noticed by PNB Academy. He spent one year in PNB Academy. He then went on to play for a number of teams, Mumbai Customs, Mumbai Porters to give a few names.
Debut
Chinglen found employment with Indian Railways in 2009. Indian Railways lost in the semi-finals of the Surjit Hockey Tournament in 2009 but Chinglen was awarded with the best player of the tournament, this justified his talent.
It was a breakthrough moment of his career as he was called up for the Indian Camp in 2010-11. Unfortunately, Chinglen remained as a stand-bye list for the Asian Champions Trophy in 2011 in Ordos, China. Two players from the Indian squad got dropped out he was called up but luck did not favor him as he still missed out due to passport issues.
Eventually, Chinglen made his debut in the Champions Challenge I in South Africa in 2011. Since then he has been a regular member of the squad.
Rise to Glory
Chinglen was very fast with his ability to set off aggressively inside the opponents’ half and created numerous chances for the Indians to breakout.
Chinglen contributed to many of India’s achievements, he was part of the 2013 Hockey Asia Cup which won Silver.
He was also part of the Silver winning team of Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow. The same year, India also finished ninth in the Hockey World Cup 2014. He was part of the squad for Asian Games 2014 in Incheon, which secured the Gold-medal, producing one of the best achievements till date for Chinglen.
He continued to display good performances. In the 2017 Hockey Asia Cup, Chinglen secured Gold again.
Low Points
Chinglen’s first setback came when he was denied the chance to play in Asian Champions Trophy in 2011 due to passport issues. After making his debut in Champions Challenge I in South Africa, he expressed his poor performance as he feels it was because of the little international experience he has.
Club Career
Chinglen was bought by the Mumbai Magicians for US$22,000 at the auction the inaugural season of Hockey India League. Mumbai Magicians finished both the first and second season in the fifth position.
Later in September 2014, Mumbai Magicians withdrew their team from the League. Chinglen appeared in 22 matches for the Mumbai Magicians in the two seasons scoring only 1 goal.
For the 2015 Season of Hockey India League, he was signed by Dabang Mumbai, the then newly formed team. He went on to play 4 matches for them and has scored two goals.
Chinglensana Kangujam was named the vice-captain of the Indian side that is going for the 2018 Hockey World Cup which is being hosted by India.
