Chamara Kapugedera: A Brief Biography

Chamara Kapugedera Biography

Chamara Kapugedera is a member of Sri Lankan cricket team. Born in Kandy, Chamara Kantha Kapugedera was regarded as one of the brightest young talents to have come out of Sri Lanka in a long time.

Famous with the nickname “Kapu” he is an all-rounder who bats in the middle order and bowls medium fast.

Background

Kapugedera went to Dharmaraja College in Kandy and started his cricket at the school level. He captained all the junior school sides from the U-13 to the first XI.

His debut first-class match was for Sri Lanka A team against New Zealand A in 2005. He used to play for Colombo Cricket Club in domestic cricket.

International Debut

Kapugedera made his Test debut against England at Lord's in 2006, aged just 18. The match was not memorable for Kapugedera as he got out for a golden duck in first innings and just scored 10 runs.

He made his ODI debut soon after, playing against Australia at Perth in 2006. He scored 22 runs in this match.

His T20 debut also came in the same year against England, with him scoring a valuable 22 runs in his team’s win.

Rise to Glory

Kapugedera’s power-packed inning of 38 runs from 21 balls, in the final of the VB Series against Australia in 2006 impressed everyone.

Courtesy of this knock, Australia lost their first home final in nine years. That innings gave him confidence and what followed was a string of consistent scores in ODIs.

Low Point

Kapugedera was dropped from the team due to inconsistency in his performance. However, after the 2007 Cricket World Cup he showed his true potential and stabilized his position in the one-day team.

Club Career

In 2012, Kapugedera played in Uthura Rudras for Sri Lanka Premier League tournament. He played a match-winning knock of 69 runs against Basnahira Cricket Dundee, which was the first victory of his team in Sri Lanka Premier League.

In Dhaka Premier Division 2014–15 season, he played for Victoria Sporting Club where he led his team to a big win with an unbeaten 161 and four wickets in a match against Prime Bank Cricket Club.
