Jadeveon Clowney is a defensive end who played for a number of teams in the NFL, most recently being the Cleveland Browns. As of 2023, he is a free agent. He was touted as a top 3 pick for the 2014 NFL draft from early on and after the college season came to an end, he was projected to go first in the upcoming draft. He has been described as a rare talent and a type of player that doesn’t come along frequently.


Jadeveon Clowney’s Early Life and Background


Clowney was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina and he went to South Pointe High School He played for the Stallions High School football team as a running back as well as a defensive end. Even at the age of just 13 years old, he already possessed a big and athletic body which drew interest from the coaching staff. With his big build and athleticism, he wreaked havoc on the team's offense.


He went on to play his college football at the University of South Carolina where he also won the 2012 Ted Hendricks award; given annually to the best defensive end in college football. In his freshman year, he recorded 36 tackles including 12 for a loss of yards to go along with 5 forced fumbles. In this season, he also won the SEC Freshman of the year.



Jadeveon Clowney’s NFL Draft


Jadeveon Clowney was part of the 2014 NFL Draft where he was selected as the 1st pick overall by the Houston Texans. From the outset, it was very clear that Clowney would be selected very high in the draft. The 2014 draft also boasts of many more players who have gone on to become stars of the game. Most notable players of this draft include Linebacker Khalil Mack, Wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans, Jarvis Landry, and Davante Adams as well as Defensive tackle Aaron Donald and Quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Derek Carr.



Jadeveon Clowney’s NFL Journey


Jadeveon Clowney started his career in the NFL with the Houston Texans in 2014. The season started off well for Clowney as he recorded his first ever tackle for a loss of 5 yards against the Arizona Cardinals in a preseason game on August 9, 2014. In his second preseason game, he earned his first professional sack after taking down Matt Ryan in the game against the Atlanta Falcons. However, after this good start, his rookie season quickly went downhill.


Clowney’s regular season debut came against the Washington Redskins on September 7, but he was forced to leave the game early in the second quarter after suffering a knee injury. He finished the season having played just 4 games for a total of 7 tackles.


The 2015 seasons began but Clowney didn’t feature in the preseason games due to his ongoing recovery process from the previous year. He returned to action against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 13, 2015. He was able to register his first NFL regular season sack in the game against the Miami Dolphins. This season fared better for Clowney as he played 13 games in which he was credited with 40 tackles and 4.5 sacks.


It was the 2016 NFL season which was the breakout season for Clowney. He had a stellar season and was named to his first Pro Bowl after recording 6 sacks, 52 tackles which included 16 tackles for loss of yards, and a fumble in 14 starts. Clowney also recorded his first ever NFL interception in the Wild Card Round against the Oakland Raiders when he picked off Connor Cook.


Following the 2016 season, he went on to play for the Houston Texans for another 2 years before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2018. During his 1 year tenure with the Seahawks, he was named as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week on account of his performance.


Clowney signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2021 and had a decent first season. However, towards the end of the 2022 season, Clowney found himself in trouble when he made comments about his displeasure with his role in the team. He was released by the Browns on 15 March, 2023.

Clowney started his career with the Texans after being drafted number 1 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. His rookie season was one to forget as he was marred by injuries and missed out on almost the entire season. In his second season, he had a pretty decent performance but it was in his final 3 seasons where he excelled and was selected for the Pro Bowl every year.


Seattle Seahawks (2019)


Jadeveon Clowney spent only 1 season with the Seahawks where he helped the team to reach the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Along the way, he had some important contributions throughout the season.



Tennessee Titans (2020)


In 2020, Clowney signed a 1 year deal with the Tennessee Titans but spent most of the year on the injured reserve list.



Cleveland Browns (2021-2023)


The Cleveland Browns signed Clowney to a 1 year deal in 2021 and then extended it further for the 2022 season. While he had one of his better years in 2021, his comments about his role in the team in 2022 did not go down well with the team management thus bringing an end to his tenure with the Browns.
