Jurgen Melzer: A Brief Biography

Jürgen Melzer is a left handed Austrian tennis player who has a career high ranking of World number 8. His brother Gerald Melzer is also a football player and has often teamed up with him to play in the doubles tournaments. He started his professional career playing in Futures in his country in 1998. He stepped out of the boundaries of Austria in 1999 playing for Futures and Challengers. He made his Grand Slam debut the following year. It was not until 2001, that he was able to capture his first title at the Challenger in Monchengladbach, Germany. Melzer won his first ATP Tour title at the 2006 BCR Open Romania, defeating Filippo Volandri. In 2010, he won his third career title, defending his 2009 victory in Vienna\'s 2010 Bank Austria-TennisTrophy against his compatriote Andreas Haider-Maurer following which he was named Austria Sportsperson of the year.
