Lance Klusener: A Brief Biography

Lance Klusener Biography


Lance Klusener is a former South African cricketer, born on 4 September 1971 in Durban, Natal Province, South Africa. Nicknamed Zulu, he performed the duties of an all-rounder for the Proteas. He was an aggressive left-handed batsman and a right-arm fast medium bowler.


Background


At the domestic level, Klusener played for KwaZulu-Natal between 1991 and 2004. In Indian Cricket League, he played for Royal Bengal tigers from 2006 to 2008. Some other teams he represented are Dolphins from 2004 to 2007, Northamptonshire from 2004 to 2008 and the Mountaineers in 2010.


Debut


Klusener made his international Test debut for South Africa against India at Calcutta in the second test match in the year 1996. In his debut match, he was hit hard by the aggressive batsman and the former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin with a string of five consecutive fours. However, in his second match, he impressed with his match-winning performance and collected his career best bowling figures of 8 for 64.


On 19 January 1996, he made his ODI debut against England. His performance in this match was not worth remembering as he was wicketless, being bowled for four overs and was sent back to the pavilion for a duck.


Rise to Glory


In the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup, he uplifted his team to reach to semi-finals. He gave his excellent performance in the tournament and was voted as Man of the Tournament for his 17 wickets and 250 runs from eight matches.


Records


He showed cased his best performance with a figure of 8 for 64 in a test match against India at Eden Gardens in the year 1996. In his international ODI career, he has gained five-wicket hauls in matches against the teams like India, Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Kenya.


Retirement


Klusener announced his retirement from international cricket in the year 2004.


In late 2007, he started playing in the Indian Cricket League Twenty20 India for the Royal Bengal Tigers team. From 2012 until 2016, he was the head coach of the Dolphins, after which he started as batting coach for the Zimbabwe national team.
