Marcos Baghdatis

Marcos Baghdatis is a Cypriot professional tennis player who reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 8 in August 2006. Marcos started playing at the age of five and soon became the ITF World Junior Tennis Champion by 2003. He joined the ATP professional tour later that year. In 2006, Marcos competed in the Wimbeldon, defeating Andy Murray in the fourth round in straight sets and 2002 champion and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals. His luck didn\'t keep up as Marcos lost to Rafael Nadal in the semifinals in 3 sets. Later that year, Marcos defeated Mario Ancic in the final at the China Open, an ATP International Series event thus making it his first career ATP tournament championship. In 2009, Marcos won the Odlum Brown Vancouver Open, a Challenger event in Vancouver beating Xavier Malisse in the final of the Trophée des Alpilles in St. Remy. The year 2010, will be highlighted in his career as the year he defeated both legendary players Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the 2010 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and Women\'s Open in Cincinnati, respectively. In July 2012 Marcos Baghdatis was selected by the Cypriot Olympic Committee to carry the Cypriot flag in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Games
