Rob Nicol Biography
Robert James Nicol is a New Zealand Cricketer who has been a part of the national side in all formats of the games.
He was born on 28th May 1983 in Auckland, New Zealand. On the domestic scene he has played for Auckland and Canterbury, he is currently the captain of his home team Auckland.
Nicol is a specialist right-handed opening batsman who is also a part-time offie.
Nicol is only the second New Zealand player after Martin Guptill to score an ODI century on debut.
Nicol is an impactful player known for his elegant stroke play and technique.
Background
Rob Nicol started off playing for Auckland and played for the Aces for 8 seasons his best form was during the 2002–03 where he scored over 600 runs.
He then moved to Canterbury in 2009, in which he scored 500 runs in his first season. Nicol made an instant name in one-day internationals when he scored a century on his debut game.
He was also impressive in his first stint with Canterbury, scoring 514 first-class runs. He was Canterbury's leading run-scorer during the Twenty20 HRV Cup scoring 237 runs at an effective strike-rate of 127.41.
Debut
However, after moving to Canterbury he had a brilliant first season where he aggregated over 500 runs. That led to him being called for the national squad for ODI against Zimbabwe.
Nicol made an impact straightaway as he scored a hundred on his debut.
Selectors rewarded him with a place in the test team in the home series against a strong South African side, but he found runs difficult to come by as he has only played 2 Tests till date.
High Points
He was at his peak in 2002/03 where he scored 664 runs but could not find a place in the National squad. However, after his move to Canterbury, he had a brilliant season in which he aggregated over 500 runs.
Nicol made an impact straightaway as he scored a hundred on his debut. He also holds the distinction of breaking the Saracens Hertfordshire Division 1 total season runs.
Low Points
Nicol has failed to impress since he scored a hundred on debut against Zimbabwe. Being in his early 30's, Nicol is nearer to the end than the start, and with emerging youngsters like Mark Chapman and Tom Latham, his return to the national side seems bleak.
Club Career
Rob Nicol started off playing for Auckland and played for the Aces where he scored over 600 runs.
He then moved to Canterbury in 2009, scoring over 500 runs. His performances for the Wizards earned him a spot in the National T20 side.
Nicol has enjoyed a spell in English county cricket playing for Gloucestershire in July 2012 as a replacement for fellow countryman Kane Williamson.
Nicol currently plays for the Otago Volts on the first class scene.
