Sayed Shirzad: A Brief Biography

Sayed Ahmed Shirzad is an Afghan cricketer who was born on 1 October 1994 at Kabul in Afghanistan. He is a Left Handed batsman and a Left Handed Medium Fast bowler who generally plays as a pace bowler for his team. He is also a lower order batsman.

Debut


Sayed Shirzad made his One Day International debut against Ireland on 2 March 2019 at Dehradun in India. This match ended in a no result, and Sayed Shirzad did not get a chance to play the match.


The T20 International debut for Sayed Shirzad came on 29 November 2015 against Oman at Abu Dhabi. Sayed Shirzad made 1 run and took 3 wickets after conceding 16 runs in his spell of 3 overs. Afghanistan won this match by 27 runs, and took a lead of 1–0 in the two match T20I series.


Sayed Shirzad made his First Class debut in the 2013 ICC Intercontinental Cup against Kenya on 6 October 2013. He took 2 wickets in the First Innings and 3 wickets in the Second Innings. Afghanistan won the match by 8 wickets, and had 6 players on its side who made their First Class Debut in this match.


Shirzad also made his List A debut on 11 July 2018 in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament, while playing for the Boost Region. He took 2 wickets in 10 overs after conceding 39 runs. However, he ended up on the losing side as Speen Ghar Region won the match by 57 runs.


Rise to Glory


Sayed Shirzad had already made his debut in the T20 International format of the game, however his spot in the national team became stable only after his performance in the 2018 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament, where he took 12 wickets in 6 matches. Later that year, he was selected for Kandhar Knights team in the Afghanistan Premier League and became the leading wicket taker with 16 wickets in 8 matches of the tournament.


He was selected in both 2018 Asia Cup squad of Afghanistan as well as in the bilateral series against Ireland, but did not play in either of the series. He played his first match against Ireland in 2019, and was later selected in the Test team of Afghanistan as well. However, he didn't play a single match and was later added to the Afghan squad of 2019 Cricket World Cup.


He has also been selected for the one off Test match against Bangladesh to be held in September 2019.


Low Points


After having made a debut in T20 Internationals, Sayed Shirzad lost his focus in the game and couldn't perform well enough to be in the team. However, after losing his spot he managed to regain a place in both ODI as well as Test squad of Afghanistan in a matter of 3 years.


Club Career


Sayed Shirzad has played for two different clubs, that is Afghan Cheetahs in 2011-12 and Kandhar Knights in 2018-19. His performance in the Faysal Bank T20 Tournament in 2011 for Afghan Cheetahs was not worth mentioning, but he emerged as the highest wicket taker in the 2018 Afghanistan Premier League for Kandhar Knights.
