Tajinderpal Singh Toor: A Brief Biography

Tajinderpal Singh Toor is an Indian shot putter born on 13th November 1994. He hails from Khosa Pando village of Punjab’s Moga district.


Tajinderpal Singh Toor - Early Life, Family & Background


Tajinderpal Singh Toor was born to Karam Singh and his wife. He belongs to a humble family of farmers. His father was a farmer and his mother is a housewife. Karam Singh passed away due to cancer in 2018.


Since childhood, Tajinderpal was interested in pursuing a career in cricket like every other Indian lad. However, he later switched to shot put upon the behest of his father. His father, Karam Singh, encouraged him to try his hand at the individual sport. Tajinderpal’s uncle was playing shot put by the time he picked up the sport and decided to train under him.


During the initial years of his career, Tajinderpal couldn’t afford to bear the expenses of his training, diet, equipment, and most importantly a pair of shoes. His shoes could only be used for a couple of months.


In 2015, Tajinderpal joined the Indian Navy. He’s currently serving as Acting Petty Officer.


Tajinderpal Singh Toor Biography


Tajinderpal Singh Toor got his career breakthrough in 2015 when he won his first national medal by winning Bronze with a throw of 17.78m at the Open National Athletics Championships. That year, he made his international debut at the World University Games, where he finished 5th in the final by throwing 19.24m.


In 2016, he won his first national Gold medal at the Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships by throwing 19.93. Later in the year, Tajinderpal won a Silver medal at the Interstate Athletics Championships with a throw of 19.21m and a Bronze at the Open National Athletics Championships with a throw of 18.36m.


In 2017, despite clinching the Gold medal at the Federation Cup by throwing 20.40m, he failed to qualify for the World Athletics Championships as he fell 0.10m short of the qualification mark. That year, he won a Gold medal at the Interstate Athletics Championships with a throw of 19.46m, followed up with another Gold medal by throwing 18.86m at the Open India Athletics Championships.


In 2019, he bagged the Gold medal at the South Asian Games with a throw of 20.03 meters. That year, he shattered his own national record of 20.75m by throwing 20.92m at the National Open Athletics Championships in Ranchi, Jharkhand.


Tajinderpal Singh Toor Achievements


Tajinderpal Singh Toor tasted his first international success when he won the Silver medal at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships by throwing 19.77, 0.03m short of winning a Gold medal.


In 2018, he competed at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, and finished 8th in the Shot Put final by throwing 19.42m. Later in August, he bagged a Gold medal at the Jakarta Asian Games with a throw of 20.75 and set the Asian Games as well as the national record.


At the 2019 Asian Championships, he clinched the Gold medal by throwing 20.22m in the final held at Doha in Qatar. That year, he participated at the World Athletics Championships but finished 18th in the qualification round with a throw of 20.43m.


Tajinderpal Singh Toor has his eyes set on the Olympics berth at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as he’s looking to achieve the Olympics qualification mark of 21.10 meters.
