Ciampa: A Brief Biography

Tommaso Whitney is an American professional wrestler signed with WWE and currently performs on RAW. He is best known for his work on the independent circuit and WWE as Tomasso Ciampa and simply Ciampa.

Professional Wrestling Career


Independent Circuit (2005-2016)


In 2005, Whitney began his wrestling career and worked on the independent circuit. Between 2005 to 2007, Whitney was making sporadic appearances on SmackDown as an enhancement talent. In 2007, he worked with OVW. After his short run with WWE, he returned to the independent circuit.


Whitney wrestled for several promotions, such as Chaotic Wrestling, PWG, TNA, and WLW. Whitney rose to prominence during his work with ROH. In ROH, Whitney won the ROH Television championship and had high-caliber feuds with Kevin Steen, Jay Lethal, Roderick Strong, and Matt Taven.

WWE (2016-Present)


DIY, Gargano, and NXT Champion (2016-2019)


In 2016, they signed Ciampa with WWE and, while working for NXT, he worked a few matches on the independent circuit. In June, he entered the CWC and lost in the first round. At TakeOver Brooklyn II, Ciampa and Gargano lost to The Revival. The matches and chemistry between the two teams made them quite popular. At TakeOver Toronto, DIY defeated The Revival to win the NXT Tag Team Championship.


In 2017, the team spent their time trying to recapture the titles from AOP. In May, Ciampa was injured but competed in a ladder match with Gargano for the titles. After the match, Ciampa turned on Gargano and took some time off. In 2018, Ciampa returned and attacked Gargano after his match with Andrade. In July, Ciampa defeated Aleister Black to win the NXT Championship.


After Ciampa's return, Gargano and Ciampa continued their feud. At TakeOver New Orleans, Gargano defeated Ciampa and At TakeOver Chicago II, Ciampa defeated Gargano. The last match of the year took place at TakeOver Brooklyn IV, where Ciampa retained his NXT Championship by defeating Gargano. In 2019, Ciampa and Gargano began working together as a tag team on RAW and SmackDown. Before they could face each other, Ciampa was injured and out of action for months.

Adam Cole, Gargano, and NXT 2.0 (2019-2022)


In October, Ciampa returned and confronted Adam Cole and The Undisputed Era. At TakeOver WarGames, Team Ciampa defeated The Undisputed Era. At Survivor Series, Ciampa joined Team NXT and lost. At TakeOver Portland, Ciampa lost to Cole due to Gargano's interference. Ciampa and Gargano faced each other in a cinematic match that was won by Gargano.


In 2020, Ciampa feuded with Karrion Kross and lost under 8 minutes. He began feuding with Timothy Thatcher and formed a team with him. In 2021, he faced Walter for the NXT UK Championship and lost. At NXT 2.0 launch, Ciampa won his second NXT Championship. He feuded with the younger wrestlers of 2.0 and lost at WarGames.


At New Year's Evil, he lost the title to Bron Breakker. In February, he began feuding with Dolph Ziggler and faced him on RAW and NXT. After his feud with Ziggler, Tony D'Angelo challenged Ciampa. At Stand and Deliver, Angelo defeated Ciampa.


Main Roster Debut (2022-Present)


Whitney debuted at WWE RAW when he attacked a returning Mustafa Ali from behind. His name was shortened to just Ciampa upon his debut. Since his debut, Ciampa has acted as the bodyguard for The Miz and only makes appearances when the latter is about to get into a fight.
