Trent Williams: A Brief Biography

Trent Williams is an offensive tackle who plays for the NFL franchise San Francisco 49ers. He is the highest-paid offensive tackle in the history of the league, after signing a contract extension with the 49ers in 2021. Williams has overcome a type of cancer called dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). He is nicknamed ‘Silverback’ after a gorilla species with the same name. He has a large frame and is very adept at keeping defenders at bay.

Trent Williams’ Early Life and Background

Williams was born in Longview, Texas and attended Longview High School. As a senior, he was the unanimous first-team all-district selection and was considered a three-star recruit for colleges. He attended the University of Oklahoma from 2006 to 2009. He became a starter at right tackle ever since his freshman season with the Oklahoma Sooners. He was part of the Oklahoma team that became the highest-scoring college team in the last decade with 702 points. He missed the regular-season finale of his final college year due to injury but still led with 102 knockdown blocks, 885 plays and was named All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

Who drafted Trent Williams?

Trent Williams was one of the highest-rated offensive tackle prospects of the 2010 NFL Draft. He was overall pick number 4 in the 1st Round of the 2010 NFL Draft, by the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders). Other players from the 2010 NFL Draft class also include offensive tackle Jammal Brown (who joined him at the Redskins), wide receiver Antonio Brown, and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Trent Williams’ NFL Journey

After being drafted by the Redskins he signed a six-year contract worth $60 million. He was made the offensive co-captain along with veteran wide receiver Santana Moss. In Week 14 he was suspended along with teammate Fred Davis for failing many drug tests. Williams encountered many bone injuries in the 2012 season but still put in a great performance.

In Week 11 of the 2014 season, Williams had accused Roy Ellison of swearing at him during the game which led to Ellison’s suspension for one game. He signed a five-year contract extension deal with the Redskins worth $66 million. In the 2016 season, Williams was suspended for games due to a violation of drug policies. Williams still made it to a 5th straight Pro-Bowl despite missing a few games. In April 2019, Williams required a surgical procedure to remove dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP); a growth from his head. The growth was first noticed in 2013 but the Washington medical staff did not deem it to be serious. He demanded to be released or traded citing negligence on part of the team to not treat his condition earlier. He was placed on the reserve list and a failure to get him traded, saw him miss out on the 2019 season.

Trent Williams was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. He was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list twice throughout the season and also suffered an elbow injury in January 2021. He signed a six-year contract extension worth $138.06 million which made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.
