Ash Ketchum has caught some seriously powerful Pokemon over the years.

It’s doubtful whether he thinks about stats or type matchups when he assembles his teams. Ash likes to use Pokemon that he forms a bond with, but that often means using them in bad matchups (i.e. he brought Pidgeotto to Brock’s Gym). These next five team members, though, were undoubtedly his best Pokemon.

Which were the best Pokemon to make it into Ash's squad?

5) Infernape

Infernape is basically the Pokemon version of Goku. Normally, Infernape is a decent threat, but it becomes so much stronger when it gets the Blaze ability activated. This matches the in-game ability where Infernape gets an attack boost after being brought down to low health. Paul is probably kicking himself that he didn’t use Chimchar.

4) Dragonite

With a great type, incredible stats, Dragon Dance, Outrage, and a whole bunch of other assets, fans have known how strong Dragonite is for quite a long time. Therefore, it’s surprising that it took until Pokemon Journeys for Ash to wake up to the fact that Dragonite is a powerhouse and he should probably add one to his team.

3) Charizard

Charizard can go head-to-head against Ash’s best team members if it ever listens to him. It took a while for Ash to earn Charizard’s full respect. Before that, it would take naps during battles and rarely do what is told. Charizard proves to be just as good in the anime as compared to the main series.

2) Greninja

Ash really unlocked a monster when he acquired Greninja. Naturally, it is a force to be reckoned with, but it becomes incredibly stronger in Ash Greninja form. There’s a reason why Game Freak made Ash Greninja so busted. In the anime, it could even take down opponents it had losing matchups with, namely Diantha’s Mega Gardevoir.

1) Pikachu

There is a laundry list of feats that Pikachu has achieved, which it should never have been capable of. It Thunderbolted a Geodude that’s immune to electricity, won a 1v1 against Raichu, conquered the world several times, etc.. It’s clear that Pikachu is Ash’s strongest asset as well as his best friend.
