What’s the story?

EPL franchise Newcastle United has been struggling to establish their foothold as a premier club for quite some time. In the last decade, the Magpies have been demoted from the top flight of English football twice and is currently struggling to stay afloat in the league.

With Newcastle fighting relegation back down to the Championship in the ongoing season, fans are desperate for current owner Mike Ashley to depart St James' Park.

And the Toon’s farcical takeover links have now reached a new level as it emerged that professional boxer Floyd Mayweather would be prepared to buy the club.

In case you did not know

Newcastle is in dire need of a new investor whose main objective would be to get the club competing back at the top end of the Premier League. Something the club has been unable to perpetuate under Mike Ashley as they seem unlikely to make the step up without major financial backing.

The heart of the matter

Mayweather has hinted over a potential takeover for the English club. The 41-year-old boxing stalwart even went as far to say that five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who presently plies his trade for Spanish giants Real Madrid would be his dream signing.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Mayweather revealed, "I love Newcastle. Those guys like to party as hard as any city I have been to anywhere in the world."

He further added, "Cristiano Ronaldo has been a long-time supporter and buddy of mine, so I might even be able to get him to finish his career off at Newcastle."

What’s next?

Though Newcastle fans on social media have talked down any potential bid, it remains to be seen what the ‘Pretty Boy’ of boxing has in store.

Author’s take

Mayweather, who has never lost in his career and has an unbeaten streak of 50-0, and is known for being someone who doesn’t take words lightly. Thus if ‘Money’ indeed plans a takeover, if not anything, the move will certainly provide a mammoth monetary boost to the club.
