Before leaving WWE, Dean Ambrose was one of the most impressive characters in the WWE roster. Born on December 7, 1985, Jonathan David Good was passionate about wrestling from a very young age.

Good began working for Les Thatcher in the Heartland Wrestling Association (HWA) promotion as a teenager by selling popcorn and setting up the ring. He began training at the age of 18 as a professional wrestler under Thatcher and Cody Hawk. Using the ring name Jon Moxley, he made his debut in June 2004, losing his debut match to Ala Hussein.

The eighth Grand Slam Champion did wonders for whichever brand he had been on and became a solo headliner even after gaining popularity through The Shield. Since then, Moxley has made a huge name for himself in WWE and has left the promotion to move on to other promotions such as All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW).

Let’s take a look at four lesser-known facts about the man who walked out of WWE and stood up for what he thought was moral and immoral.

#4 He leads a private life

Being in the entertainment business requires professionals to put everything on the line. This includes their name, reputation, time, and also their private lives. However, Moxley has been very successful in staying mum about his private life as far as possible. He is usually private and does not reveal much about his personal life in interviews, on social media, or to the fans.

During his time in WWE, he even managed to keep his relationship with Renee Young undercover for a while and the news about their marriage did not spread until two weeks after they got hitched. While almost every Superstar from WWE, AEW, and other wrestling promotions are active on social media to either spread news or interact with fans, Moxley has managed to stay away from that sickness.

"I don't feel the need to open myself up to the opinion of everybody in the world with a phone or computer. I just don't get being connected to everybody on such a superficial level like that. It's not really for me." Moxley has revealed.

His official Twitter account had no activity whatsoever except a single retweet from 2012. His Twitter biography read, "They made me get a twitter.....Fine...Enjoy", possibly signaling towards the WWE asking him to connect with fans over social media.

#3 He’s had a rough childhood

While Jon Moxley is becoming the hottest name in wrestling entertainment today, it wasn’t always easy for the superstar when he was growing up. Hailing from East End, Cincinnati, Jonathan lived with his family in public housing.

In an interview conducted in 2015, he revealed that growing up in his neighborhood “every day was a struggle.” He followed that up with:

“For instance, there were times that I would have to cave in and do something like selling somebody’s drugs, just so I wouldn’t get beaten half to death. But then there were other times where dudes would catch me walking by and try to push me around, and I had to draw a line, even if I was gonna get pulverized. I ended up earning respect that way — not that I cared, I just wanted out.”

When Moxley turned his attention to wrestling, it soon became his escape. He dropped out of college to pursue his passion and followed his dream to become one of the best wrestlers in the industry. His persona as the ‘Lunatic Fringe’, and also his troubled character has taken up a bit from his rough childhood.

#2 His wrestling idol is a WWE legend

Jon Moxley gained a lot of success during his time in WWE as Dean Ambrose, as he portrayed a very unstable character. His gimmick worked extremely well and made people believe in his lunacy. However, that took its toll as WWE wanted him to do things which he did not approve of, and that led to him walking away from the company.

He’s revealed that he got hooked on to wrestling due to one of the biggest legends in the sport. He discovered ECW, and soon Bret Hart became his favorite wrestler. Even though his gimmick is nowhere similar to The Hitman’s, he idolized Hart to a great extent.

In 2015, Moxley revealed that he “was never a Hulkamaniac” when growing up. Instead, he liked Bret Hart for the reason that “he was the realistic, relatable guy” among a “giant litany of bullies” and that Hart always found a way “to outsmart them, out trick them, outlast them.”

Moxley also revealed that Bret Hart’s on-screen character helped him stay focused and get through his rough upbringing to reach the level he is at today.

#1 He got married after midnight

What’s a crazy guy who doesn’t do crazy things? While his time in WWE, Moxley found the love of his life; Renee Young, who serves as the company’s commentator and backstage interviewer. The two managed to keep their relationship undercover for the most part, as Moxley prefers to lead a private life. They got married some time back and seem to have a good relationship with each other.

During an interview with E! News, Young revealed that they already had a marriage license for six months when they decided to elope in their backyard at 1 a.m. courtesy of a pastor they found on Yelp. She went on to say:

“We were going to bed! We were going to bed and he like busted out the ring and we were like, ‘Oh man I guess we should do this now.’ so we ended up going on Yelp and we found a 24-hour pastor to come to our backyard. It was so handy and his name was pastor Pete and he lived around the corner from us, so he was there.
They were very concerned, by the way, because it was 1 o’clock in the morning, so technically it was Sunday and they were very concerned about us calling, they were like, ‘is everything ok? Have you guys been drinking? What’s happening?’ we’re like, ‘it’s fine, you can come down.’ so we had to get a witness and we called and woke up a friend of ours and got it done.”

This is just one of many crazy stories that revolve around the superstar who is destined to make it even bigger in the wrestling world in the years to come!
