The AEW World Tag Team Championship was created by the promotion All Elite Wrestling for its bolstering tag-team division. On the October 30, 2019, episode of AEW Dynamite, SoCal Uncensored defeated The Lucha Brothers to become the inaugural champions. The AEW World Tag Team Championship is the premier tag team championship of AEW. Wrestlers on the roster can also contest for ROH Tag Team Championship and AEW World Trios Championship.

The former champions were Sting and Darby Allin in their first reign with the gold. Following Sting's retirement match at AEW Revolution, the titles were relinquished by both the holders, Sting and Darby Allin.
