Mahendra Singh Dhoni is undoubtedly the most successful Indian captain, at least statistically. For his captaincy, critics have called him a gambler and have considered him to be lucky but his greatest critics have to bow to him when it comes to his sarcastic replies. Who would have thought that the boy from Ranchi with his long hair and aggressive batting would one day go on to be not only the most extraordinary Indian captain but also the most sarcastic captain in world cricket? His interactions with reporters during pre or post-match press conferences and during personal interviews, Dhoni likes to reply in his own way. The burden of carrying the entire hopes of this cricket-crazy nation has never been an easy job especially when you are going through a rough patch, but not for Dhoni. He always brushes aside controversial questions with sarcastic replies. Here are the ten most sarcastic replies by the Indian-skipper MS Dhoni.

#10 File a PIL

MS Dhoni speaking to the press during the Australia series

Earlier this year the Indian cricket team suffered a third successive ODI series defeat under the leadership of MS Dhoni when on January 17, India conceded an unconquerable 0-3 lead to Australia in a five-match series. The critics were rounding up Dhoni and his captaincy along with his batting.

After India lost the third match in Melbourne by three wickets Dhoni came out at the post-match press conference and mocked his critics in style by saying that a review of his leadership can only be done through Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

The 34-year-old was at his sarcastic best as he said, "There will be a conflict of interest if I start reviewing my performance. We would have to put a PIL to judge my performance as the skipper."

#9 Helicopter

No helicopters under water

In a post-match press conference in Ranchi after India’s 69 run win over Sri Lanka, MS Dhoni was faced with some uncomfortable questions, which he deflected with his usual charming humour.

One of the questions he had to deal with was why does he not play his famous helicopter shot as frequently as in the past.

To which, he replied, “See, a helicopter needs a particular place to fly. If you go underwater into a submarine and ask why there are no helicopters there, then that will be a problem. I cannot play it to a bouncer unless I get a stool with me.

#8 Transition

At least Dhoni knows his music

The transition in Indian cricket has always been a rough ride and Dhoni was thrown into the deep end when he lead a young Indian side to the inaugural T20 World Cup.

In the 2011-12 tour of Australia after the Test series India moved to the ODIs with a young side. This move was very much hyped by the media.

In a press conference when Dhoni was asked to comment about this transition, he chose to tackle it with pop-culture references. He said, "From Kishore Kumar, we have gone to Sean Paul."

#7 Indian batting in Australia

Australia has always been a tough place to visit for batsmen

The Indian batsmen have traditionally faced some serious problems in the Australian pitches over the years. The fast and bouncy tracks in Australia are characteristically very different from the slow and turning sub-continent pitches.

In a press conference, Dhoni was asked why the Indian batsmen face problems with Australian pitches and conditions to which Dhoni replied with his trademark sarcasm. He said, “You won't see a Sreesanth batting like a Don Bradman just because he wants to bat like one."

#6 Post retirement plan

Stumped with the stumps

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is known to have the habit of picking up a stump as a token of remembrance after a win.

In an interview when he was asked about his post-retirement plan the wicketkeeper-batsman said, “The good thing is that I do collect a lot of stumps but the bad one has I don't put a mark as to which match they were from. So, after I retire I’ll watch the videos of all my matches, look closely at the sponsors logos on the stumps and figure out which match a stump belongs to. It will be my post-cricket pass time!

#5 Hangover

All smiles during a practice session

Dhoni is not someone who just makes the same diplomatic replies in interviews, he also likes to blend diplomacy with sarcasm. India’s tour of England in 2014 was not something Indian fans will look upon with fond memories.

During the Trent Bridge Test, England fast bowler James Anderson and Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja got involved in an ugly fight.

In a press conference replying to whether the James Anderson-Ravindra Jadeja controversy, which ended with a ‘not guilty’ verdict will surface again in the next Test Dhoni said, “Usually I don’t drink. I don’t get hangovers.”

The Indian Premier League (IPL) came under tremendous controversy when in 2013 it was rocked by spot-fixing allegations. The allegations brought back haunting memories of the past.

The controversy did not got buried with the league as it also affected the national team. In a press conference just before IPL 2014, Dhoni came with yet another sarcastic reply when he as asked to comment about how he would like to keep the IPL clean.

Captain cool said, “We will try the laundry, that’s good, will keep us clean.”

#3 Barefoot football

Dhoni tries his luck at football

Before the World T20 semifinal in 2014, the Indian team were seen playing football during a practice session which is normal because the sport is a preferred practice method of the team. What was unusual was that they were playing barefoot.

In the pre-match press conference, Dhoni was asked to explain the reason for playing football without shoes during the practice session. The Indian captain chooses to use sarcasm just before a World T20 semifinal clash against archrivals South Africa.

He jokingly said, “What to do, we are all out of money.”

#2 Australian winter

No jackets in the Australian winter for Dhoni

There is a reason why Mahender Singh Dhoni is dubbed as “Captain Cool” by numerous fans. His ability to stay calm in every situation on and off the field speaks about it. His replies to a hostile Australian media during the India-Australia series are as cool as it can get.

When he was asked how will he adapt to the Australian conditions in a press conference before the series the master pinned yet another knock-out. He used an advertising reference to insert sarcasm.

Dhoni smilingly said, "I was sitting at home and watching television. More often than not, you watch some really strong advertisements in the lead-up to an India-Australia series. The advertisement said: 'It is winter out there, and summer out here, so get ready to feel the heat Down Under.' I took it very seriously. I didn't pack a single jacket, only to realise it is pretty cold here."

#1 Stance on DRS

The DRS compared to a life jacket

The BCCI has refused to use the Decision Referral System (DRS) because it not foolproof yet and hence any bilateral tournament involving India takes place without DRS. Every other leading cricket board have opted to technology for the referral.

When the Indian-skipper was asked to clear his stance over the much-talked about DRS the Ranchi-born cricketer was at his sarcastic best. He compared the system to a life jacket and explained his stance with his unique mode of thinking.

He said, "If I am going to buy a life jacket which does not come with a warranty, that's a bit of a hassle for me. Especially with the huge amount of money you have to spend for the DRS. I would prefer some kind of warranty for it. The moment it comes, I will be happy."
