10 classic games that need to be revived

The new dawn has seen a next-gen console generation grow in the recent past. Several fan-favourite franchises have been undergoing renovations in the wake of the new consoles. However, there are some great series that have been left behind for whatever reason. There have been games from the past which entertained us, thrilled us and had us fully involved to be counted among the classics. Some of these, if not all surely deserve to have a revival in the form of new-gen sequels. Here’s a list of 10 classic games which surely need to be revived...

#10 No One Lives Forever

No One Lives Forever is a unique stealth-based FPS game of its time. A combination of parody and celebration of Cold War spy culture, NOLF features an over-the-top stylised take on international espionage. The game has been critically acclaimed for its stylistic representation of the 1960’s era and much more than that. Featuring U.N.I.T.Y. agent Cate Archer with her occasionally outlandish spy gadgets, whose objective is to defend the world from H.A.R.M. The NOLF series is a well needed respite from the overbearing seriousness of modern military shooters which seem to have flooded the gaming world with monotony.

#9 Time Splitters

Timesplitters is an FPS game which revolves around the concept of travelling through time. The series, consisting of four titles is known for its smooth gameplay and stylised visuals that bring to mind comics and cartoons. The game features a campaign, arcade mode, and a level editor which allow the player to explore diverse locations across time. A new-gen sequel for the series seems to be more or less undeniable given the response the game received and should be a real treat.

#8 Darksiders

Darksiders is a full action RPG series based around the Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse where in the gamers play as one of the four Horsemen. The Darksiders series sought to combine the best of games such as God of War, Devil May Cry, Prince of Persia and the Zelda series into one, merging their gameplay into a package bounded by Biblical lore. With Nordic Games stating that a new game won’t be due till 2016, a new-gen sequel might well be on the cards. Let’s wait and watch.

#7 Red Faction

Red Faction is a series of FPS games based on science fiction with a revolutionary socialist undertone. It was founded by Volition Inc., the developers of Saint’s Row. Always featuring a rebellion of some sort on Mars, the series has become known for its storytelling themes, and more recently, it’s environmental destruction physics as well as a wide variety of unique weapons. The series is a real fan favourite and a new-gen renovation will be great. A sequel isn’t too likely but is surely welcome.

#6 Def Jam: Fight for NY

Inspired by the eponymous rap label, Def Jam features several rap artists in an original take on the fighting genre. The game features some of the biggest names in rap music industry, including Snoop Dogg and Ludacris. The gameplay is solid and the stars provide just the right amount of vibe to the whole setup. For a game of such a stature with some awesome in-game music, a sequel is totally desirable. More punchable rappers, more battles and even more great music... sounds exciting.

#5 Burnout

A real favourite among racing game fans, Burnout was a sensation with each game in the series bringing in something new to the racing genre. The series of 5 high-speed racing games saw its last release back in 2008. Burnout Paradise, as it is called, refined the experience in an open-world setting, balancing pure racing and raw vehicular aggression with adrenaline pumping stunts. Since 2008, a sequel has been in high demand. A new-gen Burnout is bound to take the genre to a whole new level but it remains to be seen when.

#4 Half-Life

Half-Life is a series of hardcore FPS games that share a single science fiction based history. Rumors have been popping up time and again regarding the third game in the series but as of now, no solid information exists. The much anticipated sequel would be an end to one of the most critically acclaimed trilogies of all time. Few games have enjoyed this much hype with so little to show for it, thus proving the quality of the first two parts. Half-Life 3

#3 Need for Speed : Underground

Although, the main Need for Speed series has already come to new-gen, the Underground sub-series hasn’t seen action for quite some time now. A revolution then, being the first NFS game with a real story-line and car customization options, the Underground series was a great success. Rather than exotic cars, the game features vehicles associated with the import scene and is based on illegal street racing. After the revival of the Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit games, the Underground series deserves a similar treatment. So, a sequel can be expected sooner or later.

#2 Quake

Quake is a series of 4 first-person shooter games from Bethesda. Along with Doom and Wolfenstein, the original Quake did well to popularize the FPS genre in its early days, and as such received a slew of sequels. The series is seen as a trademark for sci-fi/lovecraftian horror games. However, it has been almost 10 years since the last release of the franchise despite the fact that games with an identical backdrop have been doing well. A reboot for the game is surely needed to bring back some old-school stuff, if nothing else. The series is hugely popular among fans and a sequel would be great to have.

#1 Prince of Persia

Based on Persian mythology with a compelling storyline and some graceful combat sequences – the PoP series is long overdue for a revival now with the charisma associated with the game more or less lost after the Sands of Time Trilogy. The action/puzzle series saw a follow-up and an attempted reboot later which were not upto the mark, to be honest. Now might be the right time to bring the game back to life and on the floor again with all the latest consoles and technologies at its disposal.
