Top 10 games that need to be remade

top 10 games remake

There are plenty of games today that are praised for both stunning visuals and audio, and game-play splendour. But for games from our childhood, not much can be said regarding visuals, even though the game-play element withstands the test of time. There are many titles from the past console generation and even further back that we can’t help reminiscing about, imagining how they would look using today's graphics engines and getting giddy at the thought of a remake. Several of our favourites have already made the leap to modern tech, but here are ten games that fans still want to see re-done.

#10 Donkey Kong Country

top 10 games remake

First up, we have this extremely addictive SNES side-scroller which was one of the first games to showcase what is now known as 2.5D visuals. Some eye-popping high-definition updates would be really neat, but what would be even better is if Nintendo worked on the Country series like they did with the New Super Mario Bros. series. This banana-loving jungle champion would be just as successful and add a pop-in/out co-op play with Diddy Kong and the rest of the DK crew, and maybe some challenge modes, and people would have a hard time letting go of the game. Nintendo did so some work when they brought Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii a few years back, but it was way below standard.

#9 X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter

It's been a long time since we've had a really good Star Wars space combat game as most games regarding star-wars nowadays encompass a full-scale ground campaign. Long back X-Wing Vs TIE fighter managed to create something unique and delivered satisfying space combat to sci-fi fans. However, that was almost 20 years back, and even then, they were only available on PCs and Macs because of the power required to run the game. The controls and interface are evidently outdated, so we'd need more than simple re-made ports for the series; the game would require a total revamp but it would be totally worth it.

#8 PaRappa The Rapper

For the late 90s, this rapping dog and his Simon-style beats game was way ahead of its time. Rhythm games weren't so popular at the time, but times have changed since then. The game-play was simple and addictive, and the wacky, paper-thin characters were so original that the series even dove into the cartoon world. With this beloved rapper resurfacing as a playable character in Sony's upcoming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, it will show the world in high definition how PaRappa and his gang had fans nodding their heads over a decade ago. It could also easily be put together into a one-disc collection, with the first, second, and even the UmJammer Lammy spin-off included.

#7 kami

top 10 games remake

kami hit the PlayStation 2 in 2006, and was ported to the Wii in 2008, all during a period in which the dismissal of many genres was becoming clear to the gaming audience. The cel-shaded visuals had a very unique Japanese art style and there were a lot of game-play influences from Legend of Zelda, making kami a pleasure to both play and see. It looked great at the time, but an HD remake would be even better and could use the original aesthetic to its maximum potential. However, there was news that delighted fans when Capcom announced a high-def re-mastered port coming to the PS3 which will have Move support, sport a nice Trophy list, and be easily accessible through the PlayStation Network. If you haven’t played kami, you should give the remake a try. But obviously, a fully re-vamped version for the next gen consoles will be even better.

#6 Blast Corps

With a simple clear the objective that was to clear a path for a nuclear bomb strapped to a slowly moving vehicle, it was one of the best demolition games ever made. If the nuke touched anything, "BOOM!", and the world ended. The game had silky smooth controls which was a rarity for 3D games at the time and a diverse array of vehicles, each with unique destructive capabilities. But while nearly everything on the stages could be completely destroyed, they simply evaporated in a visual mess. Some great stuff could be done with explosion effects and modern gaming physics, if a re-make of this game was to be made.

#5 Deus Ex

The original title and its sequel, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, had a great set of plotlines filled with corporate power and political conflict, coupled with many fascinating game-play mechanics with the near-future biotechnological breakthrough in human enhancements. It had all the conventions that gamers love such as fluid combat, great role-playing, and plenty of hacking tools. For its time, the visuals were actually pretty good, but the game still had lots of barren environments and fine detailing only on certain items and the menus were excessively filled with information and text. With today technology, this game could have a masterful re-make.

#4 Half-Life

top 10 games remake

A remake of this epic game is what fans have all wanted for some time now. But instead of cursing Valve for not using their money to actually give fans what they want, they could at least put together an HD collection. Don’t get me wrong; there was a Half-Life High Definition Pack which included the original as well as the two expansions, Opposing Force and Blue Shift, but anyone who played this so called "improved" version can see plainly that little effort was given in upgrading the visuals. With Half-Life 2 and subsequent Episodes looking so good, a refreshed original trio would be truly enjoyable.

#3 Kingdom Hearts

The journey of Sora, his allies Donald Duck and Goofy, and the Final Fantasy cast, soaring through Disney-inspired lands and defeating a throng of Heartless, could do with an upgrade in visuals even though this game had better graphics than most. While the colours were beautiful and the character models unique, a lot of the animations were rigid, and many backgrounds were too broad in texture. An HD dual-pack would work wonders for this game, if only Square Enix would decide to do.

#2 Eternal Darkness: Sanity\'s Requiem

"Survival horror" immediately gets you thinking about a zombie shooting romp nowadays, but during the GameCube days, but there were more subtle ways to psyche the mind through horror and it was titled Eternal Darkness. Many can still remember frantically racing out of the catacombs, warning Charlemagne. Besides updating the visuals, there isn’t really any need to change anything about this game. But although it doesn't look like they’ll be a remake, there are mutterings of a sequel being developed for the Wii U.

#1 Final Fantasy VII

top 10 games remake

This game has been on the top of remake lists for years now with every fan of the series crying for the title to make a triumphant return. Praised for its graphics back then itself, in 1997, the textures now seem dated by today's standards. The long campaign, memorable heroes and villains, vigorous customization, and game-play mechanics would require very little retooling, so updated visuals coupled with the already epic story are what fans have been begging Square Enix to produce.
