5 amusing things that happened on the deadline day

Papy Djilobodji Chelsea

With the teams always frantically trying to sign their targets and players pushing for moves to some other clubs from their own, chaos ensues leading to some surprising but amusing events taking place on the deadline day and this transfer window was no different as some of biggest clubs in Europe got messy much to the amusement of the neutrals. The final day of the transfer window always brings with it tales that epitomise not just the silliness of the hour but often summarising the dodginess of the entire two month period. Having witnessed things in the past ranging from helicopters ferrying players from one place to another or a player going missing to force a transfer, some individiuals seem to lose their senses on the day. This end to a long window brought with it some of its own stories, while some were genuinely puzzling and probably distressed the clubs, players and fans involved, it made for some amusing stories to be re-told on another day. Here is a compilation of 5 stories from the 2015 summer transfer window deadline day:

#5 Chelsea signing Papy Djilobodji and Reading defender Micchael Hector after failed pursuit of Stones and Marquinhos.

Papy Djilobodji Chelsea

It was perhaps a surprise deadline day for Chelsea - but not in the Paul Pogba shaped way Blues fans had hoped for. First up, Victor Moses swapped West for East London and joined West Ham for the season, before Papy Djilobodji signed. And then in an extremely left-field move Reading’s Michael Hector joins on a four-year deal worth 4 million pounds before being loaned back to the Royals for the year.

While not amusing on it’s own, it is a far cry from the usual panic buying huge clubs tend to do on deadline day. Manchester united’s £36-million move for Anthony Martial was more in that league. The Blues were linked with John Stones and Ezequiel Garay to shore up their defence and going from there to an unknown quantity was pretty amusing for not only fans of other clubs but their own followers as well.

#4 Saido Berahino in twitter outburst against club chairman on deadline day.

Berahino West Brom Tottenham Spurs

West Brom striker Saido Berahino tweeted against club chairman James Peace after he blocked the striker’s move to the White Heart Lane on the deadline day. Spurs had already had offers worth £18m and £22m for Saido Berahino turned down, and it emerged that one of the packages had been structured around payments of £3.5m each year for five years, which had served to infuriate West Brom and their chairman.

The English forward would not complete the move despite 4 bids from Spurs through the window. The tweet then leaves the Baggies and their player in a tough position. While both Tottenham and Jeremy Peace have explained their stance, the situation for the player is one where he has to reconsider his future at the risk of missing first-team action for half a season at least.

While he seems to vow not to play for West Brom again, the lure of the pitch may prove just too strong for the player.

#3 Player crashes his car on the way to the airport

De Pena Middlesbrough crash car deadline day

Nacional’s Uruguayan winger Carlos De Pena had an interesting deadline day as he signed for Middlebrough. When he left his home to sign the papers and complete his medical in Brazil, Nacional had not yet approved the move. When he completed the medical and other formalities and was returning from the airport in Montevideo, he met with an accident while in the car with his mother.

The pair were hospitalised in the aftermath of the accident but neither suffered serious injuries as they were reportedly released quickly after the accident. The 23-year-old may have had a bad day but it earned him a move to England’s Championship hopefuls Middlesbrough.

#2 Arsenal linked with Zlatan

Henry Zlatan Arsenal

Arsenal don’t sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Zlatan signs Arsenal. Or so it was supposed to be as rumours emerged late on that the Swede was in talks with the Londoners to fill the major striker shaped hole in their team. It was the last gleaming ray of light for a number of Arsenal fans who were left disgruntled with their club’s lack of transfer activity in the window.

The Gunners became the only club among the top 5 leagues to not have signed an outfield player in the summer. The Paris Sain-Germain striker would certainly up the standards of striking options at the Emirates. Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott as striking options have often been called not “champion club material” and the need for Arsenal to reinforce in that area has been brought up several times in the lead-up to the season.

The club were linked with Real Madrid hitman Benzema for long parts of the summer but nothing materialised and eventually the striker reiterated his loyalty to the Spanish club dashin all Arsenal fans' hopes of signing the striker.

#1 David De Gea\'s failed transfer

Navas De Gea Manchester United Real Madrid

In an event that was a bit shocking, Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea could not complete his move to Real Madrid due to late submission of the transfer documents to the LFP after everybody reported that he had sealed a switch to the Bernabeu for 29 million pounds which would have seen Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas move in the other direction.

In what was a bizarre situation, the documents could not be uploaded by the Spanish side in time after everything including the terms of contracts and transfer fees were agreed by the two clubs. After the transfer failed, the two European giants started accusing each other with both releasing official announcements the next day and blaming the other club involved.

In their official statement Real Madrid said that they had done everything that they could to sign the goalkeeper and it was because of Manchester United refusing to negotiate that they started discussing the well-publicised transfer on deadline day. On the other hand, Manchester United shifted the blame to Real saying that it was the Spanish giants who waited until the last minute to make a bid and then failed to submit the documents on time.

The whole matter got even more complicated after the involvement of Keylor Navas in the whole deal. Whatever the outcome the two people who were disappointed the most by this bizarre occurrence were the two goalkeepers in question.
