The summer transfer window has come to a close with excitement for some clubs and disappointment for some. Transfer stories came thick and fast throughout the window from David De Gea's failed move to Real Madrid to Arsenal's pursuit of Karim Benzema.There were deals that did happen and there were deals that didn't. In a season that is expected to be the most competitive we have seen for the past few years, some clubs did clever business by selling off their ageing players. Meanwhile, others were not so clever, buying at a much higher price because of their desperation.As the footballing world awaits the start of the Champions League this month, we look at the top signings from the top five leagues in Europe.

Stevan Jovetic has been the best signing of the Serie A this season after his loan move from Mnachester City to Italianside Inter Milan. The deal is reported to be an 18-month dealwith a view to a permanent transfer after the end of that period. Inter will pay a 2 million loan fee for Jovetic and are obliged to pay a further 10.25 million when they purchase him.

In addition to the loan and purchase fees for Jovetic, City will receive up to 2 million in bonuses, with Inter paying 1 million per league title or 750,000 per Champions League qualification, while the former Premier League champions have a 20 percent sell-on fee.But they will make a loss on the 25-year-old, who cost them 22 million when he joined from Fiorentina in 2013.

Jovetic was limited to 11 league starts in his two seasons at the Etihad Stadiumwhere he suffered repeated hamstring problems. City manager Manuel Pellegrini also said that injuries were the reasons for selling the striker.

His departure had been on the cards since the start of the year when he was omitted from City's Champions League squad as they were limited to 17 foreign players, and he only made two substitute appearances in the final three months of the season. He scored 8 goals for City in just 28 appearances in two seasons at the club. He had scored 27 Serie A goals in his final two seasons with Fiorentina and had continued to attract interest from Italy during his stop-start City career.

Inter manager Roberto Mancini was happy to welcome the Montenegrin as he scored a last-minute winner on his debut and alsothe only goal in a win against Atlanta.A week later, he netted both goals in a 21 victory at newcomers Carpi, the latter being a winner from the penalty spot.

Jovetic will be hoping to keep his goalscoringrun and stay away from injuries.

#4 La Liga: Luciano Vietto - Villarreal to Atletico Madrid

Luciano Vietto was purchased by Atletico Madrid for a fee in the region of15 million from Villarreal. The 21-year-old Argentine was a hot property in La Liga following his one-year stint with Villarreal where he scored 12 goals in 32 appearances in his first and only season with the club. Atletico Madrid decided to purchase the youngster afterhaving lost their striker Mario Mandzukic to Juventus in the transfer window.

Vietto hadbeen in exceptional form for Villarreal last season and Atletico manager Diego Simeone believed that the youngster could form the perfect partnership with the experienced Fernando Torres up front. Playing for Racing Club for threeseasonsfrom 2011to 2014, Vietto scored 18 goals in 69 appearances. Villarreal found him available for5.5 million and had snatched him up in a 5-year deal.

But as things stand, the Argentine has signed for Atleti and will be hoping to spur on their La Ligatitle campaign. Vietto has not so far featured in the Atletico team this season, but after the international break, when fixtures come thick and fast, he will be expected to make his official debut for his new club.

The transfer fiasco involving Manchester United and Angel Di Maria finally came to an end when he signed a four-year deal with French club Paris Saint-Germain for a fee reported to be around 44 million. The transfer meant that Di Maria only spent one season at Old Trafford after he was signed by the English club for aclub record 59.7 million.Loius van Gaal must have thought that Di Maria would bring the quality United needed.

But the Argentine international scored only 4 goals for United in 32 appearances for the club. One failed season saw the player decideto leave for France with PSG making the most of the unrest that was brewing in Manchester.

Di Maria has made 60 appearances for the Argentine national team and scored 15 goals. He was in good form in the 2015 Copa America, which he has carried into the Ligue 1 season with him. He scored two goals and assisted one for Sergio Aguero in the semi-final match against Paraguay but was substituted early on in the final with an injury and Argentina eventually lost to hosts Chile.

He made his debut for his new club away to AS Monaco, as a 66th-minute substitute for Lucas Moura, and assisted Ezequiel Lavezzi for the final goal in a 3-0 win at the Stade Louis II. PSG would be hoping that their new signing can help them cement a place among Europes elite.

For Shakhtar, Costa scored a mere 29 goals in 141 appearances in his five years with the club but wasexpected to fit well into an ageing Bayern side.He has been widely renowned for his playmaking and attacking threatdown the wings. After playing with the Brazil nationalteam at the 2015 Copa America, where his side were knocked out, Costa was on his way to Germany with Bayern.

Hemade his debut as a starter in the 2015 DFL-Supercupaway toWolfsburg in a match where he was seen making an immediate impact. Hiscross was met byArjen Robbento open the scoring in an eventual 1-1 draw. He netted his attempt in the subsequent penalty shootout, but his team lost nonetheless. 13 days later, he scored his first goal for his new club against Hamburgerand then put in a superb performance against Bayer Leverkusen, assisting Thomas Muller for the first goal.

Guardiola hadbeen looking to add to his squad before the new seasonand Costa was available as an option on the right flank. The Brazil international has been proving to be the right replacement for Frank Ribery.

Premier Leagues top transfer of the recently concluded transfer window is Andre Ayew as he has impressed in his first four games for the Welsh club. Andre Ayew joined Swansea City on a free transfer in early Junefollowing theexpiry of his contract with hisprevious club Marseille.

The Ghana internationalpenned a four-year deal with the Swans and French newspaper LEquipe reportedthat Swansea gave the player an amount of 5.7 million as a sign on fee. The deal has made Ayew earnaround 50-60k per week, making him the highest paid player at his new club.

Ayew had a great last season with the French club, scoring 11 goals in only 29 appearances. He also led his Ghana side to a runners-up finish at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. With Marseille, Ayew scored 60 goals in 202 appearances spanning six seasons. After joining Swansea City, the Ghana international has lifted his side at the right moments and has led them into the top 4 with his performances.

Ayew scored his first goal for Swansea Cityon his debut against Chelseaon the opening day of the seasonin a 22 draw at Stamford Bridge.He also scored his second goal in his second game for the Swansin their 2-0 victory against Newcastle United and continued his form in the next league fixture against Manchester United, where he scored while alsoclaimingan assist.

As a reward for his performances in the Premier League, he hasbeen chosen captain of his national side during the international break and will be hoping to keep the form going into the rest of his first season in England.
