5 Possible Opponents for the Undertaker at Summerslam

Association with the Undertaker could breathe new life into Barrett’s career

The Undertaker at Summerslam? With the rumour mills whirring overtime leading up to the Battleground pay-per-view this Sunday, interest levels in the show are sure to spike. Added to the gripping storylines (well, most of them anyway) that are set to find further resolution, talk has been rife surrounding the WWE having the Undertaker make a possible return during the show and advance a storyline that would ideally culminate at Summerslam. With Wrestlemania 32 touted to be the Undertaker’s final hurrah, nothing short of having him enter into the Show of Shows looking every bit the indestructible phenom of lore would be prudent booking as far as the WWE is concerned. With a change of guard afoot in the WWE though, finding the perfect Superstar to throw as fodder to the Undertaker’s momentum heading into Wrestlemania could be a tricky proposition to say the least.Despite being limited in their selection, here is a look at 5 possible opponents that could galvanise the Undertaker’s charge into Wrestlemania by facing him at Summerslam. Given that a face-off with Sting may be more spectacular if conducted on the grandest stage of them all, the Icon has not be considered within the discussion of this list.

#1 Wade Barrett

Association with the Undertaker could breathe new life into Barrett’s career

Despite outlasting 7 other Superstars in the recently revived King of the Ring tournament, the push that Wade Barrett has received on the back of his victory has been less than ideal in many respects. First off, devoid of any serious character heat, Barrett has descended into a stereotypical portrayal of a “King” who demands that his “subjects” revere him. To compound matters, he finds himself embroiled in a feud with R-Truth that seems to offer more comedic relief than serious action.’

Perhaps elevating him into a storyline with the returning Undertaker could be an avenue that the WWE might consider exploring, given that Barrett is fully expected to triumph over R-Truth in Battleground and even a loss to the Undertaker at Summerslamwould be better than the mediocrity that he currently seems to be entombed in.

#2 Mark Henry

A heavyweight encounter between Mark Henry and the Undertaker could be in the offing

Another possible Superstar with whom a feud could have the Undertaker believably primed and well-poised to enter Wrestlemania as a force to reckon with, is the World’s Strongest Man Mark Henry. The fact that he does not seem to be otherwise engaged in a solid feud is also attributing towards the cause.

Perhaps more than any other reason though, the thought of how strong the Undertaker would look were he to dispose of Mark Henry, a veteran who is associated with a great deal of legitimacy himself, entices to no end. With everybody buzzing about the identity of the Undertaker’s potential opponent at Wrestlemania, a feud with Mark Henry in lead-up to that may be a wise choice in putting over the Undertaker and yet not risking the momentum of other younger Superstars.

#3 The Miz

The Miz could spice things up with his shenanigans, in a storyline involving the Undertaker

Attaching The Miz into the Intercontinental Title picture involving Ryback and Big Show was a second-guessable call in itself and the Big Guy’s recent injury has compounded the problem. Without a feud following Battleground now, the Hollywood A-lister could desperately do with a more becoming storyline to be a part of.

With The Undertaker touted to return at either Battleground or the fall-out episode of Raw, The Miz provides a readily available mid-card Superstar who could direly do with the rub that a feud with the Phenom would present. Pitting the Miz against the Undertaker would also serve up an interesting confluence between the cowardice of the Miz and the intimidation tactics of the Phenom; an exercise that could see the Undertaker’s aura greatly accentuated on the road to Wrestlemania.

Owing to the fact that the Undertaker would probably not appear in every Raw and Smackdown show between Battleground and Summerslam, the Miz’s propensity with the microphone could be key in moving the storyline forward in his absence.

#4 Big Show

Could the WWE go for one more earth-shattering encounter between the two behemoths?

Standing at 7 feet tall and weighing in over 500 pounds, the WWE’s resident giant could well be the solution that the company could eventually resort to. Currently caught in the middle of a believable heel run, the Big Show could be the fall-back answer as to who the WWE would match the Undertaker up against at Summerslam.

His persona as a monster heel has been established beyond a shadow of a doubt over the years and his CV can surely suffer a loss to the Undertaker without being deprived of either momentum or credibility. Possibly the only drawback that charting this course entails is that it is essentially an easy option; a viable fail-safe at most. With the newer Superstars unlikely to be derailed from their respective tracks however, the WWE could well turn to its largest source for answers yet again.

#5 Kane

A final encounter between Kane and the Undertaker may possess the most metaphorical relevance

If the recent episodes of Raw are to be believed, the WWE creative team may just be angling for the Brother of Destructions to cross paths one final time. The unconnected jibes that are being thrown around about Kane’s family have been conspicuously suggestive and he’s also had to endure snide remarks about his transformation from the Devil’s Favourite Demon into the corporate crony that plies with the Authority’s every wish for some time now.

With Brock Lesnar’s systematic yet brutal demolition of Seth Rollins’ posse, Kane has been written off the storylines until Battleground at least, providing an apt respite that may yet precede a comeback as the masked denizen with temper issues.

If so, the WWE could include a poignant historical highlight involving Kane and the Undertaker in what is shaping up to be the final leg of the Phenom’s vaunted WWE career.
