3 reasons why Caleb Williams may ditch going to the NFL

Caleb Williams is widely expected to be the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The USC quarterback is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and one of the best quarterbacks to come out of college in years. However, his dad recently came out and declared Caleb wouldn't enter the draft unless it was the right fit.

#1. Discontent with the NFL team that gets to draft first overall – The first and most obvious reason is dissatisfaction with the team that gets the first overall pick. Williams has the option of staying in college next season if he does not like the team that gets the first overall pick. Williams' father told GQ that he will be wise with his career and will not enter the Draft just to become a pro, as it must be the proper match for him:

“The way the system is constructed, you go to the worst possible situation. The worst possible team, the worst organization in the league — because of their desire for parity — gets the first pick. So it’s the gift and the curse.

"I mean, I’ve talked to Archie Manning — his career was shot because he went to a horrible organization. I’ve talked to [USC head coach Lincoln Riley], and Kyler struggled because of where he was drafted. Baker [Mayfield] struggled mightily because of where he was drafted. The organizations matter."

#2. To three-peat the Heisman – This is a bit of a long shot, but if Williams wins the Heisman Trophy this season, which he's currently favored to do, he could go back to USC to try and make history. Williams would then be joining a short list of back-to-back Heisman winners and could try to go for more.

Only one player in college football history has won the Heisman Trophy back-to-back: Archie Griffin in 1975 and 1976. No player has ever won three consecutive tournaments, so if Williams wins this year, he will make even more history.

#3. Win a national title – The final reason Williams may decide to stay at USC is to win a national championship. Williams has yet to participate in the college football postseason, but with it increasing next season, he has the best shot.

On paper, USC appears to be a title contender if they get out of the Pac-12. However, the likes of Georgia still stand in their way as the best team in college football. Williams may want to depart college as a national champion before entering the NFL.

This week in the pros, all four of the league's remaining winless teams will face off against another member of their miserable group, with the Broncos traveling to face the Bears and the Vikings facing the Panthers in Carolina, thanks to a scheduling coincidence that rarely occurs.

Barring a tie, two of these franchises will exit Week 4 with a 0-4 start. More often than not, a team that starts 0-4 team ends up with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Should Williams decide to enter the draft, one of these four teams could be the destination.
