The Chiefs' success can be attributed to their adept scouting department, which has drafted many of their top players. However, the team has also had instances where their picks turned out to be duds.

In the 2000 draft, the KC picked WR Morris, & he had a decent rookie season with 48 catches, 678 yards, & 3 TDs. However, he never played another game after that year despite being under contract until 2004.

Speaks was selected by the Chiefs in 2018's round 2 but was cut before the 2020 season. He missed time through injury, as well as being banned for 4 games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The Chiefs drafted LT Jenkins in 1995, but he only played 9 games before being cut. He failed to make a mark with the Saints and Vikings & wasn't able to secure a spot on the San Francisco Demons' XFL roster.

The Chiefs drafted Sims in the 2002 Draft, but he didn't meet the team's expectations despite playing for them for 5 seasons. He only managed 8.5 sacks & was traded to the Saints after the 2006 season.

Blackledge was picked in the 1983 draft, but his entire career only amounted to 46 games played between the Chiefs & Pit, with 5,286 yards, 29 TDs, & 38 INTs.

Todd Blackledge

To make the matter worse, they drafted Blackledge ahead of future Hall of Famers Marino & Kelly. Blackledge was the last QB the Chiefs took in the first round until Mahomes was selected in 2017.
