Former New York Jet Mark Sanchez is now a married man. The 36-year-old tied the knot to “Shameless” and “In the Dark” star Perry Mattfeld over Memorial Day weekend. Let’s take a look at the couple’s wedding ceremony.

Mark Sanchez and Perry Mattfeld exchanged vows in a historic 16th-century colonial monastery on May 28, in Oaxaca, Mexico. The two got engaged a year ago and have now tied the knot. In an interview with People magazine, Mattfeld described the ceremony as emotional and special for both of them.

Sanchez and Perry both have Mexican heritage and have visited the beautiful city of Oaxaca in the past. The couple immediately knew that this would be an incredible venue for their special day. Photos of the entire ceremony were shared on social media through the PEOPLE magazine as well as by multiple guests.

Sanchez was escorted to the altar by his mother as Leslie Powell and Seth Cook, Sanchez’s close friends, performed “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by Elton John. While the bride made her entrance to Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up”.

The former quarterback’s eight-year-old son Daniel stood beside the couple as the ring bearer as well as the groomsman as the two exchanged vows. After the ceremony ended, the wedding reception was held at the Cosa dos Lagos which is a private residence in Oaxaca.

Both venues followed the theme of the wedding which was “Butterflies”. The Cosa dos Lagos along also holds a garden and a beautiful butterfly sanctuary. The butterfly theme was also followed on the wedding invitation as well as Mattfeld’s veil and the couple’s wedding bands. Perry later explained that the butterflies were a way to mark the presence of loved ones that had passed away.

The couple went with the traditional choice for the meal at the reception with an Oaxaca-style Mole as the main. For dessert, Mark and Perry combined their favorite flavors to create a three-tiered wedding cake made from coconut tres leches. The dessert also had churros and vanilla ice cream as another option.

Mark and Perry got engaged in May 2022 and initially met in 2017 through Scotty McKnight. McKnight also officiated the wedding, making it a full circle. Some of the guests included former Jets center and Mark’s teammate Nick Mangold and Texas State head coach G.J. Kinne.

Mark Sanchez has been a star during his college career at USC. The quarterback was a standout from 2006-2008, earning a First-Team All-Pac 10 team selection in 2008. The fifth-overall pick in the 2009 draft, he led the Jets to two consecutive winning records including a playoff appearance in 2010.

Entering his fifth season as a Jet, Sanchez hurt his shoulder ruling him out for the entire year. After three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, and getting cut by the Broncos before the start of the season, Sanchez spent three seasons with the Cowboys, Bears, and Redskins before retiring in 2019.
