Former Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Atatiana Jefferson, on December 20, 2022.

Jefferson was allegedly shot by Dean, who was one of the responding officers to the scene, from the window of her home while she was playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew.

Dean later testified in Texas court that he killed her on the pretence that she was an armed burglar.

Aaron Dean thought he was responding to the scene of a burglary, according to Bob Gill, Aaron Dean's attorney.

According to the prosecution, Jefferson allegedly armed herself in case they were potential intruders after hearing the police outside the house

Bob Gill stated that even though Jefferson had the legal right to carry a weapon, she should not have aimed it at a police officer.

Kyle Clayton, a psychologist who profiled Dean, concluded that he was not psychologically fit to serve as a police officer.

For the murder of Atatiana Jefferson, Aaron Dean initially faced a sentence of up to 20 years.
