On the final day of the Jeffers Bay Open in South Africa, Australian surfer Mick Fanning survived after a close encounter with a shark. The triply World Surfing Champion was lucky to escape without any serious injuries.

Soon after the start of the final of the tournament, the shark surfaced beside Fanning and knocked him off his surfing board. After a quick altercation, surfing offials appeared on the scene on a support boat to help him.

He said he kicked the shark and managed to get a punch on the back of the mammal.

“I was just sitting there and I felt something just get stuck in my leg rope, and I was kicking trying to get it away,” Sky reported the 34-year-old recalling the encounter. “I just saw fins. I was waiting for the teeth.”

The final has been put on hold as the organisers believe it is too risky to continue the high-profile competition.
