National records set at the 2015 National games

Sajan Prakash excelled in the pool

After an action packed fortnight at the National games in Kerala,let us sit back and look at athletes who entered the record books with their impeccable performances.

Sajan Prakash was clearly the trend setter when it came to setting new records. The Kerala lad hogged all the limelight as he finished with a total haul of six golds and two silver medals. He was named the best male athlete at the games for topping the list as far as individual medal winners are concerned.

Prakash finished 400 m freestyle event in 3:57.16 ahead of Karnataka’s Saurabh Sangvekar (3:58.62) set in Indian Nationals in Pune in 2012. Prakash also broke the 200 m butterfly record in a time of 2:069 seconds ahead of Rehan Poncha (2:070 seconds) in Asian Age group championships in 2009 in Tokyo. The local lad sure enjoyed home conditions.

Madhu PS of Services was another brilliant performer in the pool. He broke the 100 m backstroke in 57.62 seconds ahead of Ranajoy Punja (58.02) in the American Final 1988 at Fort Lauderdale. He also set the 200 m backstroke record 2:5.66 seconds ahead of Rehan Poncha (2:06.92) in World Championships in 2009 at Rome, Italy.
