Indian Women's Hockey team Bio

Indian Women’s Hockey Team is regarded as one of the best women’s hockey teams in Asia. They have been part of the International Hockey Federation since 1973. The team made their international debut in the 1974 Women’s Hockey World Cup, where they finished 4th, marking the dawn of the Indian Women Hockey Team.

1980 saw the introduction of women’s hockey in the Olympics and India were among the six national teams to qualify for the inaugural edition of the women’s hockey at the Moscow Olympics. The 1980 Olympics was an international breakthrough for the Indian women’s hockey team after they finished 4th in the event.

In 1982, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team won their first international Gold medal at the Asian Games in New Delhi, India. Between 1986 and 2018, they won two Silver medals (1998 and 2018) and three Bronze medals (1986, 2006, and 2014) at the Asian Games. In addition to this, the team had won a Gold medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, two Asia Cup titles in 2004 and 2017, and an Asian Champions Trophy in 2016.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team qualified for their third Olympics at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after scoring 6 goals in two games against the USA at the 2019 FIH Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifiers and has been placed in Group A alongside reigning Olympic champion Argentina, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and Spain.
