The Swiss maestro's 6th Australian Open title in 2018 came at the 50th edition of the tournament in the Open Era. It was Federer's 20th and most recent Grand Slam title, and marked his first successful title defence at a Grand Slam since the 2008 US Open.

Following his tournament debut in 2000 when he lost to Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the fourth round, Federer has been a regular feature at the Grand Slam tournament down under. Federer'r 11 consecutive semifinals from 2004 to 2014 encompassing four title triumphs is a tournament record.

The 2020 Australian Open would be Federer's 21st consecutive appearance at the tournament, which would break a tie he presently shares with Lleyton Hewitt (1997 - 2016).

#2 First player to record 100 match wins at the Australian Open

Federer has 97 match wins at the Australian Open, which is the most by any player in the tournament.

A run to the second week at the 2020 edition of the tournament next year, assuming he receives no walkovers, would bring up match win # 100 for Federer down under.

It would also make the 20-time Grand Slam champion the first player to bring up a triple-digit win-tally at two different tournaments, and for that purpose, at two different Grand Slam tournaments. Federer has a record 101 match wins at Wimbledon.

#3 First player to reach 8 finals at the Australian Open

Federer, along with defending champion Novak Djokovic, are the only players in the Open Era to reach seven finals at the Australian Open.

Provided Djokovic does not reach the title match, a run to the final at the 2020 Australian Open for Federer would create a new record for most finals at the tournament.

In the pre-Open Era (before 1969), Jack Crawford and John Bromwich also reached seven Australian Open title matches.

#4 Oldest Grand Slam champion

A title run at the 2020 Australian Open would mark Federer's seventh triumph at the tournament. This would equal the record of Novak Djokovic for most titles at the Australian Open.

Federer's 21st Grand Slam title would also make him the oldest Grand Slam champion in the Open Era, and would increase his wafer-thin lead of one title over his closest challenger Rafael Nadal who has 19.
