Donald Young plays a backhand in his win over Tommy Haas in the first round

The first ATP 500 tournament on the North American hard courts got underway in Washington on Monday. With top seeds getting a bye in the first round, unseeded players set the ball rolling at the Citi Open.

Tommy Haas’s return to the tour after battling a shoulder injury last year ended with a loss against American Donald Young 6-3, 6-4. The 37-year-old got a wildcard for the event, where he was the runner-up in 2012.

Haas’s compatriot Benjamin Becker was ousted by Teymuraz Gabashvili 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Gabashvili will face top seed Andy Murray in the second round.

Australia’s Marinko Matosevic, who was ranked as high as No. 39 in the world lost to Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 6-3.

18-year-old Alexander Zverev beat qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka 7-6 (1), 6-3. Zverev will take on South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the next round. Hyeon Chung, who beat Dudi Sela 6-2, 6-1 on Monday faces US Open champion Marin Cilic in the second round.

James Duckworth got the better of American qualifier Ryan Harrison 6-1, 7-6 (4) and will take on second seed Kei Nishikori on Tuesday.

Ricardas Berankis beat Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6 (1), 6-3.

Victor Estrella Burgos beat Nicolas Jarry 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Go Soeda beat Darian King 6-2, 6-1.
