Rafael Nadal through to the third round of Montreal Masters

Rafael Nadal celebrates his win over Sergiy Stakhovsky

With the day 2 coming to an end, there were some hard fought victories and some big upsets.

The second seeded Andy Murray had to wait for a long time during his match against Tommy Robredo as it was disrupted due to rain. At 4-4 in the first set the players had to go back into the dressing room.

After the break, Murray came out all guns blazing and finished off the match 6-4, 7-5. "I lost my timing in the middle of the second set but came up with some good shots towards the end," Murray told BBC Sport.

"I feel much better on the court. I am hitting my back hand better and it forced Tommy to slice the ball. Then I could dictate the points. It wasn't something I could do early on in the year."

He will face Gilles Muller in the third round. Muller beat Gael Monfils 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) in his second round fixture.

Rafael Nadal did not have it easy during his second round win against Sergiy Stakhovsky, but sparkled during the second set. Nadal took some time getting off the blocks winning the first set in a tie break. He then went on to demolish Stakhovsky 6-3 in the second set.

Speaking to ATPWorldTour.com he said, “The important thing is winning, you have another opportunity tomorrow. This is a part of the season that I won zero points last year. Every match that I won are points that I add to the computer for my [ATP Ranking]. That's important for me today. Every victory is important for me. That was a good one. Let's try tomorrow.”

Nadal plays Mikhail Youzhny next, who beat No.9 seed Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-4.

Stan Warwinka seeded No. 3 retired during his match against Nick Kryigos. Warwinka complained of a back problem and pulled out in the third set where he was trailing Krygios 4-0. Kyrgios will play John Isner in the next round.

Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov all faced upsets.
