Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal through to quarterfinals of Montreal Masters

Novak Djokovic plays a backhand in his win over Jack Sock

Top seeds progressed through to the last eight of the Montreal Masters without much of a difficulty on Thursday. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic beat Jack Sock 6-2, 6-1 in the first match of the day.

Djokovic was very impressive on his serve getting 83% of first serves in and winning 74% service points. Sock had one break point opportunity in the whole set, which he failed to convert. It cost the American dear as Djokovic broke him twice including the last game to lead by a set.

Sock was broken in the fourth game of the second set after he made an unforced error on break point to trail 1-3. The American netted his forehand in the sixth game to go two breaks down. It was an uphill task from thereon for Sock, who managed to win just 42% points in the second set.

Djokovic will take on Ernests Gulbis in the quarterfinals on Friday. Gulbis beat American Donald Young 7-6(5), 6-3.

Second seed Andy Murray beat Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour. The Scot won 72% of service points which included 4 aces. Muller’s serve was put under pressure by Murray who broke the Luxembourger’s serve on four occasions. Muller did not help his cause by committing five double faults.

Murray will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the semifinal.

In another Round of 16 match, Rafael Nadal was too good for Mikhail Youzhny. The Spaniard won the match 6-3, 6-3. including three breaks of serve.Youzhny did have three break point opportunities in the match, which he failed to convert.

Nadal sets up a blockbuster quarterfinal against Kei Nishikori, who beat David Goffin 6-4, 6-4.

American John Isner got the better of Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the last eight. He will take on Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinal, who survived an onslaught from Ivo Karlovic to prevail 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4.
