Somdev Devvarman jumps 3 spots in latest ATP rankings to be placed 184th

2013 Sony Open Tennis - Day 7

India’s highest ranked men’s singles player Somdev Devvarman moved up three spots to be placed 184th in the latest ATP rankings.

It may be pertinent to mention that Somdev had surged eighteen spots in the previous week, following a praiseworthy semifinal finish in the ATP Sarasota Challenger clay court tennis tournament, held in Florida, USA.

Somdev got the better of two higher ranked players en route to the men’s singles semifinals, where he was shown the championship exit door by eventual champion American Alex Kuznetsov of USA.

The Indian had conquered 93rd ranked Jesse Levine of Canada in the first round before accounting for 152nd ranked German Mischa Zverev in the quarterfinals.

Beating Levine and Zverev played a significant part in Somdev climbing up in the latest ATP rankings.

The Indian, who went into the ATP Sarasota Challenger with an ATP ranking of 205, is on a comeback trail after a serious shoulder injury put him out of action for more than nine months in 2012.

Sondev has been regularly taking part in ATP events only since late last year. He had reached a career-high ATP ranking of 62 in July 2011.

He recently locked horns with world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round of the Miami Masters and lost in straight sets to the Serb.

Somdev later atoned for his semifinal defeat in the men’s singles by winning the men’s doubles crown, partnering Serbian Ilija Bozoljac and outduelling the American pair of Steve Johnson and Bradley Klahn in an intriguing clash.

Among the other Indian men’s singles players, Yuki Bhambri advanced nine spots to be placed 262nd.

However, N Sriram Balaji fell five spots to be ranked 327th.

Talented Sanam Singh moved up two spots to be placed 335th.

Vishnu Vardhan fell one spot to be placed 346, while Prakash Amritraj, son of legendary Vijay Amritraj, advanced one spot to be ranked 364th.

Meanwhile, Rishika Sunkara moved up two spots to be placed 475th spot in the latest WTA rankings. She is the highest ranked women’s singles player in the country.

Meanwhile, Ankita Raina surged 35 spots to be placed 489 – the Pune girl has been in rollicking form having made four consecutive ITF Futures final appearances. Ankita was runners-up in the two ITF Futures tournaments in Hyderabad before she went on to win the Chennai Futures.

However, she finished runners-up in the recently-concluded Lucknow Futures.

Prerna Bhambri – cousin of Ankita and Sanaa Bhambri – moved up one spot to be ranked 512th.

Rutuja Bhosale advanced one spot to be placed 602nd.

Nidhi Chilumula fell two spots to be placed 612th, while Prarthana Thombare advanced 25 spots to be placed 624th. Prarthana had reached the semifinals of the Lucknow Futures.
