Somdev reaches semis in Nottingham

2013 French Open - Day One

Indian tennis ace Somdev Devvarman reached the semifinals of the Aegon Nottingham Challenge by defeating American Donald Young in three sets 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4.

Devvarman started the day with his pre-quarterfinal match against American Jack Sock, which was nicely poised at 2-2 in the final set after rain had stopped play on the previous day. Somdev had made an incredible comeback in the second set of the second round match where he was trailing 5-2 with his opponent Sock serving for the match. However, the gritty Indian clawed his way back to take the set to a tie break and win it 7-5. The momentum helped Somdev to take the final set 6-3 and enter the quarterfinals with a 1-6 7-6(5) 6-3 win.

After a grueling match earlier in the day, Devvarman had another similar encounter against world number 157 Donald Young in the quarters. After losing the first set 6-3, the second set went to a tie break with the Indian winning 7-4. Somdev then held his nerve in the final set to complete another comeback win in the day, taking the final set 6-4. In the semifinals, Somdev will be up against another American – world number 120 Steve Johnson.
