Pune - Unseeded Shrey Gupta from Haryana registered the biggest upset by packing off top-seeded Vishnu Prasad and storm into the quarterfinals of the boy’s singles in the Walchand Cup U-16 National Series junior tennis tournament being organised and hosted by Deccan Gymkhana on Wednesday.
The boy’s section had two more upsets registered. Maharashtra’s Sahil Gaware and Vasudev Vijayaraman (Tamil Nadu) held center-stage with contrasting wins, while Zeel Desai took the upset count of the day to four in the girl’s section.
The day, however, belonged to Shrey who battled one and a half hour to put out Delhi-lad Vishnu Prasad 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Following the top-seeds upset, Maharashtra’s Sahil put out No. 4 Udayan Bhakar of Rajasthan. The south paw, with a sound performance, wowed the crowd before walking out a 6-3, 6-4 winner.
Sahil joined No. 6 Indra Patwardhan and unseeded Aryan Goveas and keep the Maharashtra interest alive in the section.
Later, Tamil Nadu’s Vasudev Vijayaraman won a long drawn battle against eight seeded P.V.Gnana Bhaskar of Andhra Pradesh 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Vasudev’s under two hour tussle, thus ensured that the quarterfinal round will have just four seeded players in fray.
In the girl’s section, Gujarat-lass Zeel Desai put an end to eight seeded R. Abhinikka of Tamil Nadu in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
