There was some fierce baseline hitting in the first set, in which Gulbis took a 4-0 lead.

The Latvian had 12 break points and only dropped three games during the course of the match, whilst Bautista-Agut didn’t manage to muster a single chance to break serve.

Gulbis served five aces altogether – one coming at set point in the first set.

The 25 year old is currently ranked 34 in the world, his highest ever ranking came in early 2011 when he was ranked 21.

Another ace on match point saw the Latvian notch up a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

The match was all over in just over one hour and Gulbis will play Michal Przysiezny of Poland in the semi-finals.
