Indian Wells 2012 - First round action gets underway

The women’s main draw of the BNP Paribas Open got underway in Indian Wells, California on Wednesday. Since all the 32 seeded players have first round byes, most of the action centred around the unseeded women.

18-year-old American wild card Sloane Stephens needed more than three hours to beat Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7), even saving a match point on the way. Also through to the second round is American wild card Jamie Hampton, who beat Polona Hercog for the loss of just one game.

Otehrs through to the second round include rising German Mona Barthel, Romanian Sorana Cirstea, American Vania King, Japanese veteran Kimiki Date-Krumm and India’s Sania Mirza.
