Chains are a necessary component for just about every chandelier available in Terraria. Not only are they used for furniture and crafting stations, but you can also place chains themselves as furniture and they will function like ropes. This guide will show you how to craft chains and how to use them.
To craft a chain all you will need is one iron/lead bar. In order to make the chains you will also need an anvil to unlock the recipe, and a furnace to smelt your ore into bars. You can find the grayish ore anywhere underground or even close to the surface of your world. Every 3 iron/lead ore will make 1 bar, and every bar will make 10 chains.
First start by finding iron/lead ore. It is pretty common to find, and you may even run into a few bars in naturally generated chests. Regardless of how you find them, ensure you have enough to make an anvil, if you do not have one already, and your chains. You will need 5 iron/lead bars to make an anvil (15 iron/lead ore).
Once you have the required materials and crafting stations, simply stand near your anvil and scroll down until you see the chains. Each time you click on this crafting recipe, one of your iron/lead bars will turn into 10 chains.
Chains are most typically used in a few different kinds of recipes. You can make a grappling hook out of three chains and a hook; chandeliers out of their respective material, torches, and chains; a watch to keep track of the day/night cycle and exactly what time it is; a sawmill with a chain, 10 wood, and 2 iron/lead bars; and finally, you can make a heart lantern with a heart crystal and 4 chains.
Most of these recipes are for furniture or cosmetic effects, but the heart lantern can help you during boss fights by providing a unique regeneration buff. This buff is separate from regeneration potions and campfires so it can really add up for boss encounters. The sawmill is mostly for aesthetic furniture, but it can unlock a good amount of recipes, and the grappling hook is a big milestone for unlocking a large portion of your character’s movement.
Chains are most typically used for decorative purposes, but there are a few recipes that call for chains that have more of a practical benefit. Given that they are so cheap to make, you can add some detail to your homes or bases with the low cost of 1 iron/lead bar. Having 10 chains to work with per bar is forgiving, to say the least, and allows you to make lots of different practical or pretty furniture pieces for your home or arena.
A. Chains function identically to ropes in Terraria and you can latch onto a chain and climb up and down it. The only difference between ropes and chains is how ropes can be made into coils and chains cannot. Once ropes and chains are placed, they are functionally identical.
A. You will need at least an iron/lead anvil in order to make chains in Terraria. Of course if you are at a later stage in the game, just about any anvil will do. If you happen to be strapped for iron or lead bars, visit the merchant NPC in order to buy an anvil for 50 silver.
A. A grappling hook requires 3 chains and a hook in order to craft at an anvil. The hardest part of this recipe would be to get a hook to drop from skeletons or piranhas. It is a relatively rare drop and has less than a 4% chance to drop from its respective enemies. You may be able to skip the grappling hook and craft an upgraded variant of one if you manage to find enough precious gems or get one to drop from a boss.
