Duxbury’s excessive foundation trend went viral on Tiktok in March 2021 and received a fair bit of criticism from beauty experts across the industry, most notably, Jones Road, founder and iconic makeup artist Bobbi Brown herself, who clapped back with a video of her own. In the video, Bobbi slaps on the foundation just like Meredith does. "So I always love learning new makeup techniques and I learned one today. I'm not sure if it's gonna work but I'm gonna try. Hm… didn't really work," Bobbi said. The comment section was bursting with negative comments against Duxbury. “This is hilarious and justified," one person wrote, while another commented: "If Bobbi Brown dragged me like this I would literally never show my face again." In an interview with Business Insider, Meredith reveals a little more about why she uses such an unconventional way to apply cosmetics, saying "I was a broke college student, and the beauty sponge kind of just absorbed all of my foundation," she said. "I use a little more foundation than the regular person because I do have freckles, so it takes me a few more layers to cover everything up. I was using a foundation that was like $50, and I was like, 'I can't afford to have the beauty sponge soak up all of my foundation,' so I was like, 'I'm just gonna use my hands," she continued. "And I like that the warmth of my hands blends everything so smooth and nicely."

I would stack up some cardboard boxes and make a random tripod out of whatever I could find, and I started doing before-and-after transitions here and there. My videos took off when I started doing rap lip-syncing videos to Nicki Minaj’s ‘I’m Legit’ song. And I created a trend called #thefoundationchallenge where I would smear foundation all over my face. It would get hundreds of millions of views. I created three videos a day during quarantine and learned so much about the industry. But I’d say 2019 was when I [first] immersed myself in the beauty world. The TikTok algorithm shows that, if you’re consistent, you can grow.”
