The Charleston Open, formally branded as the Credit One Charleston Open, is a WTA 500 tournament. It first started in 1973 and has been held each year since then apart from 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Former champions at the Charleston Open include some of the biggest names in the sport is Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Serena Williams.
Venue and Dates
The venue for the competition was Hilton Head Island in 1973 and 1974. The following two years, it was held in Amelia Island in Florida. However, the tournament returned to Hilto Head Island in 1977 and was held there until 2000.
Since 2001, the Charleston Open has been held at the Family Circle Tennis Centre in Charleston. The stadium was built that year and has as many as 17 courts with the main stadium having a capacity of 10,200.
