Wyatt Johnston looks like the next player the Dallas Stars want to extend. After signing Jake Oettinger to an eight-year deal, the Stars are focused on the 20-year-old forward, as his quick development has made him an important part of the young core.
Insider Elliotte Friedman has reported that Johnston will likely get a contract offer, similar to those of other key players like Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz and Jake Oettinger. All three are signed for around $8 million per year.
Friedman suggested that the Stars will likely offer Johnston a long-term deal in the "8-ish" million range.
"I would bet now that Dallas gets started on Wyatt Johnston... If you look at it, their young core, (Miro) Heiskanen is in the '8s' ($8.45M AAV), (Roope) Hintz is in the 8s ($8.45M AAV), Oettinger's in the 8s ($8.25M). You have to look at it, and believe they say to Wyatt Johnston, 'If you want term, what do you think about the number '8-ish'?" (per nhltraderumors)
The deal may not happen right away, but it's clear the Stars see Johnston as a key part of their future. Given Johnston's production, offering him a long-term deal would align with how Dallas is securing its young talents. Now in his third NHL season, Johnston has proven to be a key player.
His 24-goal rookie season, followed by a 32-goal sophomore campaign, has raised expectations. Johnston continues to perform well, with five points in his first five games this season. After back-to-back Conference Finals appearances, the Stars are aiming to go further, with Johnston to play a major role.
Jim Nill confirms ongoing talks with Wyatt Johnston's agent
Stars GM Jim Nill confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Wyatt Johnston's agent but mentioned that they are "playing it by ear" for now. The team appears fine with waiting as Johnston continues to perform well early in the season.
"Jim Nill spoke tonight and said he and Jake Oettinger’s agent agreed they’d either reach a deal quickly or shut it down until next offseason. Said they didn’t want any drama. He also said he’s in talks with Wyatt Johnston’s agent but that they’re playing it by ear for now," Insider Lia Assimakopoulos tweeted.
In the first three home games, Johnston has scored one goal and made two assists, with a +2 rating. He's also averaging nearly 19 minutes of ice time per game.
The Dallas Stars have found a balance between their veteran leaders, like Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, and emerging young players. Extending Johnston would strengthen this transition and keep the core stable as they aim for more success.
