Competition Couture at the Sochi Winter Olympics

First, it was the Spiderman-inspired suits of the 90s worn by American skiers. Then in 2010 it was the pants of the Norwegian curling team. Guess what, folks? Both skiing and Norway’s men of curling are making new fashion statements in Sochi!

Mexico’s Hubertus Von Hohenlohe is hoping a spicy mariachi-themed ski suit will help him race to victory. And no, that name doesn’t sound Spanish because Hohenlohe is of German descent (but was born in Mexico). The 55-year-old grew up skiing in Austria, and in the mid-1980s he returned to the country of his birthplace to develop its skiing program. You know, if he could place well enough, there’s a chance that Steve Martin or Martin Short could join the team in 2018. But more importantly, do his ski poles also serve as maracas?

The Norwegian men’s curling team won over fans with those argyle golf pants worn during competition in Vancouver. The pants with panache must have been a good luck charm, because the team won a silver medal. It seems a new tradition has begun, because the team’s 2014 attire does not disappoint. Once again using Loudmouth Golf as its supplier, the team recently posed for photos in this dapper ensemble:

It’s going to take a lot to top these looks. Aside from Russian ice dancers, it’s unlikely anyone can outdo the Mexican Mariachi and the Norwegian Men With Brooms. All I can say is, count me in to watch men’s curling; and as for skiing….Olé!
