WWE have had quite a few big stories in the last year or so, with the return of some Superstars, massive feuds, as well as unexpected Superstars winning top titles. It's been quite a whirlwind year or so, inside and outside the ring, and it seems that 2020 could be the same.

Edge's return earlier this year, Kofi Kingston winning the WWE Championship, the incredible feud between Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, and Charlotte Flair have all grabbed the headlines over the last year.

With WrestleMania season in full swing and stiff competition from a new rival in AEW, there will be a lot of surprises in store for WWE fans in the months to follow in 2020.

Let's take a look at 10 unexpected WWE headlines that could stun the world in 2020:

#10 Roman Reigns turns heel

Roman Reigns is on his way to being projected as the face of WWE once again, after building his way up following his return from fighting leukemia. The Big Dog, who has been on the main roster since 2012, has not quite been a fan favorite over the last few years, as the WWE Universe has felt that he has been pushed ahead of other deserving Superstars.

Reigns was entrusted to take on the role of John Cena in WWE as being the face of the product. While he has done everything that WWE have asked of him, fans don't want him to be at the top of the card all the time.

The Big Dog has always been a babyface, much like Cena (who briefly was a heel at the start of his career), and WWE have not experimented in turning Reigns heel. Reigns is a Superstar that is loved by kids and has good merchandise sales, which could die if he turns heel.

But, if WWE ever pull the trigger to turn him heel, that would be one of their best decisions in recent times, and one that would stun the pro wrestling world.

#9 Top WWE star joins AEW

Rey Mysterio

Ever since AEW was former in early 2019, they have made a lot of headlines with the signing of several exciting young wrestlers from the indies, as well as big-name veterans from WWE. The Tony Khan-led promotion have signed former WWE Superstars like Chris Jericho, Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley), Neville (Pac), Luke Harper (Brodie Lee), and Matt Hardy, to name a few.

They even have a few WWE Hall of Famers in non-wrestling roles like Arn Anderson, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Tully Blanchard, and Billy Gunn. AEW have big money to spend to secure the signings of more talented WWE Superstars, and we could see a few current WWE Superstars leave the company in 2020 to join AEW.

The Revival look set to leave the company and AEW seems to be their likely destination, but this move wouldn't be a shock to most fans. Someone like Rusev - who could be a big boost to AEW's mid-card - could also join AEW. But, what would create a lot of waves is the signing of a WWE legend like Rey Mysterio, whose contract is reportedly set to expire later this year.

#8 Hulk Hogan has one final WWE match

Hulk Hogan has had quite a rocky last few years due to the racism allegations, but it seems that his relationship with WWE has been smoothed out now.

The WWE Hall of Famer, who turns 67 later this year, revealed last year that he is in great shape and that he wants one final match in his WWE career. Hogan wanted to wrestle at this year's WrestleMania and face off against WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

“I’ve been pushing and negotiating very hard and I’m actually healthy, I’m in very good shape. A little bit under 300 pounds, maybe 295 pounds. I’m getting ready. I’m going to have one little tiny surgery on my back, maybe take me a couple of months to recover, but I’ve got my eyes set for WrestleMania. The one I’d love to get in the ring with if I only had one person would be Vince McMahon. I’m very sick of his stuff too.”

Hogan hasn't gotten in the ring in 8 years, with his last match happening on TNA, while his last match in WWE was back in 2006 when he faced Randy Orton at SummerSlam.

#7 Triple H takes over creative control of WWE

Triple H
Triple H

Triple H has revolutionized WWE in a way that many would not have expected. NXT is the brainchild of The Game. The black and gold brand began as a developmental promotion for young Superstars to hone their craft before moving to SmackDown and RAW.

But, NXT has become more than just a small brand to develop future Superstars. The third brand of WWE have put on tremendous matches and storylines and has an indie wrestling vibe that is far different from what RAW and SmackDown has to offer. He has also brought in Superstars from all over the world and even set up a brand outside of the US.

Many fans have been clamoring for WWE to put Triple H in charge of all of WWE's programming, giving him creative control to help evolve WWE. But Vince McMahon, the WWE Chairman, who has been at the helm of affairs for a long time, doesn't seem like he will step down anytime soon.

Triple H taking over the creative team of all of WWE would be one that fans would love and would cause a few ripples all over pro wrestling.

#6 Paige returns to wrestle

There have been a few Superstars who have returned from injuries to shock the WWE Universe in recent times. First, it was Daniel Bryan, who was forced to retire back in 2016, but he returned two years later, to the surprise of millions of fans.

Another Superstar and WWE Hall of Famer who was forced to call it quits early in his career was Edge, who retired in 2011. But, the Rated-R Superstar made a return at this year's Royal Rumble match and will be a part of WrestleMania 36.

A Superstar whose WWE career was cut short at a young age is Paige, who retired on the SmackDown after WrestleMania 34 in 2018. The youngest Divas Champion had to retire due to neck injuries, which brought an end to a promising career.

Paige has still been involved with WWE, first as the General Manager of SmackDown, and now more recently as an analyst on the Backstage show on FOX. The returns of Daniel Bryan and Edge to the in-ring competition will give Paige hope to return to the ring, and a potential return could stun the wrestling world.

#5 The Undertaker vs Sting finally takes place

Sting

Another Hall of Famer who suffered an injury with brought his wrestling career to an end was Sting, who suffered a neck injury in a match against Seth Rollins. That was Sting's fourth match in WWE back in 2015.

Most fans had given up hope of him ever returning to the ring, but Sting revealed recently that he could be up for one last match in WWE. But, his condition was that it would only be against The Undertaker:

“If there was a Taker situation at WrestleMania, I would listen to that phone call. I could get in condition and I could pull it off." With Undertaker facing AJ Styles at WrestleMania, there's no possibility of Sting vs Undertaker happening at The Show of Shows. But, it could be a blessing, in a way, as a match of this magnitude has to happen in front of a loud and vociferous crowd.

Perhaps this could happen later this year at SummerSlam or Survivor Series in 2020?

#4 Becky Lynch turns heel

Becky Lynch

Becky Lynch's ascent to the top of WWE began back in 2018 at SummerSlam when she was in a triple threat match against then SmackDown Women's Champion Carmella and Charlotte Flair. Flair won the match after it seemed like Lynch was closing in on a victory. Lynch turned heel that night after attacking Charlotte, but instead of the crowd booing her, they cheered her actions.

Lynch has since then taken the ball and run with it and has an incredible 18 months, with the piece de resistance being the WrestleMania 35 headliner against Charlotte and Ronda Rousey. But, through this time, she has been cheered and loved by the fans.

But, could WWE switch things around and make her a full-blown heel to perhaps push a younger Superstar or someone different on the women's division? It's a risky move, considering how over Lynch is at the moment, but it could be one that will create interest in the product as the WWE Universe doesn't expect this to happen.

#3 Brock Lesnar walks away for good

Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar has been one of WWE's biggest finds in the last 25 years, and one that had a massive impact on the promotion. Lesnar, who debuted way back in 2002, had just a two-year run with the company, walking away from the company at WrestleMania XX.

He then before tried his hand at NFL, before becoming UFC Heavyweight Champion, and then returned to WWE once again in 2012.

Lesnar, who is in the eighth year in his second run with the company, has achieved quite a lot, but it has come at a price. Fans have turned on him time and again, mostly for him being a part-timer and being catapulted to the top of the card time and again. Despite the brickbats he has received, Lesnar is an important figure in the recent history of WWE, and has helped tell fantastic stories in the ring.

Could 2020 be the year that Brock Lesnar walks away from WWE, just like he did in 2004, but this time for good?

#2 CM Punk returns

CM Punk
CM Punk

One of the biggest and most surprising returns to the WWE fold in the last few years has been CM Punk, who was announced as a panelist on WWE Backstage last year. With his return has come talks of him getting back in the ring once again, and Punk hasn't brushed off that question.

In a recent appearance on the Swings and Mrs. show, Punk revealed what it would take for him to lace up his wrestling boots and get back in the ring once again:

"I get that question a lot and the answer changes. It's a very fluid answer. Currently, if the business was right and I had somebody that motivated me - across the ring from me. I think um... I think might be able to get it done, but nobody's dangled the correct carrot."

While his return to WWE may have seemed improbable even last year, his addition to the Backstage panel has raised hopes in the fans of the former WWE Champion to see him in a WWE ring once again.

#1 Vince McMahon retires

Vince McMahon
Vince McMahon

At 74 years of age, Vince McMahon still has a firm grip over what happens on RAW and SmackDown, as well as a myriad of other things involving WWE. Vince McMahon has an incredible work ethic and he doesn't want to see his baby, i.e. WWE, slip away from his control.

But, how long can he be in charge of the company considering the numerous things that he has to take care of, as well as his age? McMahon relaunched the XFL, a football league to rival the NFL, which did not have much success in its first run back in 2001. This time, too, the league had to be suspended in its very first season, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

It's highly unlikely that Vince McMahon will retire from WWE, even with his focus now firmly on XFL, which is why it is at the top of our list at #1. If McMahon does retire, it will have a massive impact on not just WWE, but the pro wrestling world as a whole.
