Every sport has records and record holders that add to its mystique. What would baseball be without the all-time home run record? Many would like to see Barry Bonds' tainted total of 762 get broken. In tennis, Roger Federer has won the most men's Grand Slam singles titles, with 20, but it's feasible that longtime rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic could break that total, making for a thrilling, high-stakes race. WWE has several records like this.
Adding even more to the mystique of a sport are those records which appear unbreakable. Cy Young's record of 511 wins will never be broken because of the way baseball has changed. Nolan Ryan's strikeout total of 5,714 was accumulated over a 27 year career and as a result, will likely never be broken, but it's fun to think about the chase.
WWE has several records like this, also, and we'll now take a look at them. We'll begin in the most appropriate place, with championship records.
Longest title reign: Bruno Sammartino - 2,803 days
We can also add the most cumulative days as champion to this section, with Bruno Sammartino amassing a total of 4,040 days as WWE Champion over two reigns.
Nobody is touching either of these records. In fact, nobody is going to come close. Even Hulk Hogan, who at the height of Hulkamania reigned as WWE Champion for four years, was still more than 1,000 days behind, and at the close of his career was close to 2,000 days behind Bruno Sammartino's combined total of days as champion.
Hulkamania itself started before the drastic changes in the business and how it distributes content - first over pay per view, then over cable, and now over the internet. There will never be a title reign like Hogan's, let alone Bruno Sammartino's, again. The ubiquity of the content guarantees that. Can you imagine a seven-year title reign in this era of overexposure?
Bruno was the original strongman who dominated the wrestling world earning a legacy like no other. He was inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.
Most Royal Rumble match wins: Stone Cold Steve Austin - 3
The Royal Rumble match is always the most anticipated on the WWE calendar. Not only does it determine who the company will build around during its biggest months, but it's also a lot of fun. Exploring some Rumble records is par for the course in a post such as this.
We'll start with the most obvious of them. Stone Cold Steve Austin's record of winning the Royal Rumble match three times is unlikely to ever be surpassed. Three active superstars - Randy Orton, John Cena, and Triple H - have won the Royal Rumble match twice, but those same superstars are in the twilight of their careers, and they would need to win one more Royal Rumble match just to tie Austin's record, which is an unlikely event indeed. Them winning two more Rumbles simply seems inconceivable.
Brock Lesnar, Rey Mysterio, Undertaker, Sheamus, Roman Reigns, Shinsuke Nakamura, Seth Rollins, Asuka, and Becky Lynch are the active superstars who have one Royal Rumble victory to their names. Lesnar, Mysterio, Undertaker, Sheamus, Nakamura, and Asuka don't have a realistic chance of winning another. Reigns, Rollins, and Lynch might have another victory in them, but were it to occur, it would probably be late in their careers, and put them in no better position than Orton, Cena, and Triple H are in now.
Austin's record is likely to stand the test of time.
Most accumulated time in the Royal Rumble match: Chris Jericho - 5:01:30
Chris Jericho's decision to sign full time with All Elite Wrestling probably doesn't sit well with the WWE brass. He's an iconic performer in the company and has a distinction in its most famous match - he's the all-time Royal Rumble Iron Man. His record of 5:01:30 total time in the Royal Rumble match has been racked up over 11 appearances. His nearest competitors are Triple H and Rey Mysterio, who are both more than an hour behind. Randy Orton, who also has 11 Rumble appearances, is close to two hours behind at 3:18:42. No other active competitor is even at the three-hour mark.
While it's feasible that somebody like Seth Rollins could break the record someday, he still hasn't even had 10 Royal Rumble appearances, and he'd need to rack up a lot of time in his subsequent appearances to have a shot.
Jericho's record is likely going to stay unbroken.
The Ayatollah of Rock 'n' Rolla boasts of a longevity like no other peer and has been one of the stalwarts of the wrestling industry.
Most total Royal Rumble eliminations: Kane - 44
Kane has had a long career that's seen him eliminate 44 total people in the Royal Rumble, thanks in part to another record he holds that we'll still get into.
This particular record might not seem so unbreakable. The Undertaker, who recently retired in 2020, is close behind him, with a total of 40. However, the last Royal Rumble he appeared in was in 2017, and with his career now in a zombie phase, it's unknown if he'll ever appear in one again.
The next closest active competitor is Triple H, who is far behind, with 33, and he too might never appear in another Royal Rumble.
Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns have an impressive total of 30 eliminations racked up over 4 and 5 Royal Rumble appearances, respectively. At the rate they're on, they will beat Kane, but they will need to stay at that pace for several years. With Reigns battling leukemia with no timetable to return, and Strowman already 35, my bet is that they will taper off.
Most Royal Rumble appearances: Kane - 19
Kane's impressive 44 eliminations have been racked up over a total of 19 appearances, which is another Rumble record that's likely not to be broken. The next closest number is Goldust's distant 13. Some of the longest standing names in the company, like Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, and even The Undertaker, are far behind, with 11 or 12 appearances each.
Rey Mysterio and Shelton Benjamin each have 10 appearances. No other active superstar, including the likes of Seth Rollins, has even competed in 10 Royal Rumble matches. With an aging main roster, Kane's Royal Rumble appearance record looks increasingly untouchable.
It's feasible that some of the very young prodigies in NXT - Velveteen Dream, Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, Rhea Ripley, etc. - could break Kane's record one day, but that would be pure speculation. Let's see if they even succeed on the main roster first.
The big red machine was recently inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and his conquests remain the stuff of legends.
Most appearances in a Royal Rumble match: Mick Foley - 3
This is one of the most bizarre and enjoyable records in WWE. It's also one that's guaranteed to never be broken.
In the 1998 Royal Rumble match, Mick Foley appeared three times, once for each of his different monikers - Mankind, Cactus Jack, and Dude Love. No other superstar has appeared twice in the same Royal Rumble match.
Nia Jax sort of came close this year, when she stole R-Truth's spot and entered the men's Royal Rumble match on the same night she competed in the earlier women's Royal Rumble match, but that still consisted of entering two different matches.
Maybe somebody will have multiple personalities that they can enter the Royal Rumble match with. Finn Balor and The Demon come to mind. Even that scenario would still only see him enter the Royal Rumble twice, where he would need to do it two more times to break Foley's record.
Foley was one of the mainstays of the WWE during the attitude era and was known for his hardcore wrestling style. His split personality gimmick was well received by the WWE universe and Foley pulled it off with equal panache.
Most consecutive WrestleMania wins: The Undertaker - 21
The Grandest Stage of Them All has a lot of records to add to its mystique, and unsurprisingly, The Undertaker dominates a lot of them. Undoubtedly the most famous of them, and the most famous record in all of WWE is his WrestleMania undefeated streak.
For 21 years, The Undertaker beat everyone he encountered at WWE's biggest show. What started as a strange coincidence quickly morphed into one of the biggest and most important things in WWE history. It dominated WWE for a decade and has lingered for years after it finally ended in 2014, as WWE has futilely tried to transfer the rub that Brock Lesnar got from ending the streak on to Roman Reigns, turning the former into an unstoppable monster that has had a deleterious effect on WWE programming.
In another record, Undertaker would go on to rack up four more victories after 2014. His WrestleMania total stands at 25 wins.
Neither of these records has a chance of being broken.
Most WrestleMania appearances: The Undertaker - 26
The Undertaker has appeared at all but two WrestleManias since WrestleMania VII in 1991. He only missed 1994's WrestleMania X and WrestleMania 2000 due to injuries. That's a remarkable total. The rumors swirling about his lack of appearance at WrestleMania 37 this April are so notable because he's always been there.
The next closest total is Triple H, who has appeared in 22 WrestleMania events, starting with WrestleMania XII. The only one he's missed since then is WrestleMania 23, where he was injured.
Triple H's total isn't that far behind the Undertaker's, but he reportedly had no match this year, and he'll be turning 50 in July. To break the Undertaker's record, he would need to appear five more times on The Grandest Stage Of Them All, and that's assuming the Deadman is actually done. He has a way of surprising (and frustrating) people every year.
The Undertaker is a personification of what Wrestlemanaia stands for and represents the grandest stage of them all in its truest sense.
Most WrestleMania losses: Triple H - 13
Unfortunately for Triple H, he does hold a dubious record that's unlikely to be broken - 13 WrestleMania losses.
At first, that wouldn't appear to be the case. Triple H has been the subject of infamous WrestleMania controversies and "burials" over the years, most infamously involving Booker T at WrestleMania 19. Triple H was also the first heel to walk out of WrestleMania as champion, as seen in 2000, and has even scored a WrestleMania victory over the 'beast incarnate' Brock Lesnar.
But surprisingly, despite these victories, Triple H has lost more times than anyone else on the Show Of Shows, walking out of WrestleMania 12, 15, 17, 20, 21, 22, 24, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, and 34 as the loser.
This is an unlikely record to be surpassed, especially if Triple H keeps adding to it, which seems like a probable scenario, even if not this year. Many superstars would be lucky to even appear at 13 WrestleManias.
Longest winning streak: Asuka ~231 matches, 914 days
Win/loss records matter, no matter how much WWE tries to skirt around the fact. We'll start with the most notable win/loss record of all.
Asuka went for a span of around 231 matches and 914 days without suffering a pinfall or submission loss, a streak that lasted from her arrival in NXT in October of 2015 to WrestleMania 34 in April of 2018.
The closest active competitor is Ronda Rousey who is at about 24 matches (according to profightdb) and less than 365 days into her own streak. To beat Asuka's record, Rousey would need to continue as is into late 2020 in time and for hundreds of more matches in length. Neither scenario seems likely to occur.
No other superstar seems like a probable bet to even match Rousey's current streak, let alone the one that Asuka amassed up until last year's WrestleMania. This one is going to stand the test of time.
Asuka has been an integral part of the growing diva's division in the WWE and is one of its top competitors.
Longest losing streak: Curt Hawkins ~269 matches
The last time Curt Hawkins scored a victory was on November 8th, 2016, which was a fateful day for more than one reason. Since then, Hawkins has scored one draw against Dean Ambrose, but has lost every other match, to the point that it had now become part of his gimmick. He's basically the reverse Asuka.
Hawkins' fortune changed when he teamed up with Zack Ryder to defeat The Revival at Wrestlemania 35 for the Raw Tag Team Championship titles. It was a massive achievement considering how Hawkins' career was heading. The match was unfortunately on the Pre-show of Wrestelamania and it managed to draw lesser eyeballs than expected.
Hawkins didn't get to keep his title for long enough as he dropped it back to The Revival and was soon released from the company along with tag team partner Zack Ryder owing to budget cuts. He is a part of Impact wrestling now.
Either way, this is a record that's unlikely to be surpassed by any superstar in the future, even the lowest rung of jobbers.
