3 best and 3 worst WWE Money in the Bank winners

There are few matches in WWE more exciting than the Money in the Bank ladder match.

Much like the Royal Rumble, the MITB match can make a star overnight, as one win gives a Superstar a guaranteed title shot against either a World or Women's Champion, at any time, anywhere.

Since its inception at WrestleMania 21, 70 Superstars have attempted to become Money in the Bank winners, though only a handful have.

But just winning the match isn't enough, as the winner must then topple the champion.

And even if they do that, their reign as the top star may not last long, for a multitude of reasons.

Here are three WWE Money in the Bank winners who did great things after winning the contract, as well as three who did very poorly.

#3 Worst: Sheamus 2015

By 2015, the Money in the Bank ladder match had become a staple of WWE.

But despite the match often being used to elevate younger stars, the 2015 bout was won by Sheamus, already a three-time World Champion.

Biding his time, Sheamus wouldn't cash in until Survivor Series, blindsiding Roman Reigns, who had just won the title.

A thinly veiled attempt to get the fans to cheer for the Big Dog, Sheamus' reign would be as uneventful as his time as Mr. Money in the Bank.

Beaten by Reigns on the December 14 edition of Monday Night RAW, the win was a historic night for the Samoan but showed that the company no longer saw the Irishman as a top star.

Now nearly four years later, it's unlikely we'll ever see the Great White as World Champion ever again.

#3 Best: Dolph Ziggler

Though Dolph Ziggler captured the 2012 SmackDown Money in the Bank contract as a heel, it was clear that the fans were behind him.

For years, the ShowOff had impressed fans with his in-ring skill and character work, and though he was a former World Champion, this reign ended as quickly as it arrived.

After successfully defending the contract from John Cena that December, Ziggler would wait until the night after WrestleMania 29 to cash in.

Attacking a prone Del Rio, Ziggler received a huge pop from the rabid crowd, who were still reeling from an epic Mania the night prior.

Though his reign would be short-lived, partly due to a concussion that prevented him from competing, Ziggler's cash-in and shocking title win is still fondly remembered by fans all these years later.

#2 Worst: Alberto Del Rio

Alberto Del Rio's initial year in WWE was an odd affair.

Starting off strong, Del Rio would quickly rise up the ranks of SmackDown, and after winning the 2011 40-Man Royal Rumble, it seemed a world title was a sure thing.

This momentum was halted though at WrestleMania 27 when he lost to World Heavyweight Champion Edge in the show's opener, but Del Rio got a second shot when he won the RAW Money in the Bank ladder match.

After initially trying to cash-in that night, Del Rio would cash-in for real at SummerSlam 2011.

Pinning CM Punk, Del Rio's reign would be very short, as he'd quickly lose the title to John Cena, and though he'd regain it quickly after, this reign was also short, and the damage to the Mexican Aristocrat's career was done.

#2 Best: Seth Rollins

As WWE approached WrestleMania 31, things were looking dire in the main event picture.

Fans had grown tired of WWE World Champion Brock Lesnar's part-time schedule and stranglehold on the title.

On the other hand, many fans loathed Roman Reigns after the Big Dog had been heavily pushed in 2014, and didn't want to see him with the gold either.

As their Mania main event got underway, it was clear fans weren't happy.

Fortunately, a saving grace came in the form of Seth Rollins, who had captured the elusive contract the prior year.

Cashing in and winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, this was the first time MITB had been cashed in during the WrestleMania main event, as the Architect saved the day and showed just how good he really was.

#1 Worst: Baron Corbin

Corbin's Money in the Bank win led to very little for the Lone Wolf
Corbin's Money in the Bank win led to very little for the Lone Wolf

Though Sheamus had been a long-established star when he won the MITB briefcase in 2015, the WWE definitely went the other way two years later.

In a huge match that featured former World Champions Dolph Ziggler, AJ Styles, and Kevin Owens, it was Baron Corbin who got the win, as many saw him as the next big thing.

Cashing in not long after on Jinder Mahal, Corbin's future would be derailed, thanks to an interfering John Cena.

Distracting the Lone Wolf, Mahal would quickly roll up Corbin to retain the title, infuriating the now former Mr. Money in the Bank.

Meeting Cena days later at SummerSlam, the 16-time World Champion practically flattened Corbin, ending their feud, meaning Corbin's Money in the Bank win, a win against some of SmackDown Live's very best, meant absolutely nothing.

#1 Best: Edge

There has been a lot of Money in the Bank winners, but there can only be one number one.

Capturing the contract in the very first Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 21, the Rated-R Superstar was in no rush to cash-in, as he planned his epic strategy.

Whilst many fans thought that winners had to announce their opponent, Edge had clearly read the fine print, which stated the contract could be cashed in at any time.

That time came at New Years Revolution 2006, when Edge (who had come up short against Ric Flair earlier that night), cashed in on a prone John Cena.

After surviving the Elimination Chamber, Cena was a bloody mess and was easy pickings.

Winning his first world title, Edge showed why he's the Ultimate Opportunist, and changed the WWE forever.
