4 Likely return matches for Finn Balor after Johnny Gargano's injury

Finn Balor shocked the entire WWE Universe when he made his return to NXT after a hiatus. His last match was at SummerSlam 2019 against ‘The Fiend” Bray Wyatt where he took the fall to put the masked man over.

After his return, Balor has done several things to shock the WWE Universe. Balor turned heel, blindsided the beloved Johnny Gargano, attacked Matt Riddle, and showed his respect to the invading AJ Styles and The OC.

The build-up since his return suggested that he’d be battling against Gargano at the NXT TakeOver: WarGames, but it seems like Balor’s Bloody Sunday to Gargano a few weeks ago did much more damage than we’d initially expected, and he won’t be fit enough to battle at the event.

In such a case, the company will be looking for alternatives to take Gargano’s place and give Balor a fitting return match on the Black & Gold Brand.

In this article, we will look at the four possible returns matches for 'The Prince' Finn Balor.

#4 vs. Tyler Bate

Tyler Bate may be the strongest pound for pound wrestler out there.
Tyler Bate may be the strongest pound for pound wrestler out there.

Tyler Bate has proven to be one of NXT UK’s best exports, and as the former NXT United Kingdom Champion, the babyface has made a huge name for himself in the wrestling industry.

Bate recently started appearing on NXT again and took on Cameron Grimes before being attacked by Killian Dain. As Dain’s eyes are firmly set on Bate’s friend from the UK, Pete Dunne, we could see Bate being freed up to start an angle with Balor.

Balor and Bate are both lightweight Superstars who have done extremely well against Superstars of all sizes. Their technical style of fighting can provide NXT fans with a match to remember. This could result in Balor picking on Bate next before moving back to Gargano, once he returns from injury.

The company could immediately book an angle between these two men leading up to NXT TakeOver: WarGames, where Balor could fight his first match back in NXT against the former NXT UK Champion.

#3 vs. Matt Riddle

In a short amount of time, Matt Riddle has proven to be one of the top Superstars in NXT. Everything he’s done since his debut has been memorable, and his last hard-hitting feud with Killian Dain was one of the best we’ve seen in recent times.

Matt Riddle teamed up with Tommaso Ciampa and Keith Lee to take on RAW’s premiere faction, The OC, on NXT last week. While the action was going great, and it seemed like NXT had the upper hand, Finn Balor appeared to lay Riddle out on the ramp with a Bloody Sunday before showing respect to his former Bullet Club partner AJ Styles.

Balor’s move, the same one that has taken Johnny Gargano out of action, could have infuriated Riddle, as he is one of the most aggressive competitors in NXT. In the coming weeks, we could see Riddle develop a rivalry with Finn Balor, and even pull out of his WarGames match just to challenge Balor to a brawl in order to teach him a lesson.

If that’s the route the company is planning to take, especially after Balor’s attack on Riddle, then fans can prepare for some incredible segments and matches in the weeks to come.

#2 WarGames Match - NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2019

Will Balor join Ciampa, Riddle, and Lee in their battle against The Undisputed Era?
Will Balor join Ciampa, Riddle, and Lee in their battle against The Undisputed Era?

The much anticipated NXT TakeOver: WarGames is just around the corner, and The Undisputed Era will have a steep task ahead, as the company has managed to already stack up a good team against them.

Tommaso Ciampa will battle in a team alongside Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, and another yet to be announced Superstar. While there are several men who can join the babyfaces in their battle against NXT's top faction, it would make sense if Finn Balor is picked for the match, so long as he has no other commitments for the event.

Johnny Gargano is one of the closest Superstars to Ciampa, but we could see Ciampa set aside his differences with Balor in order to prepare a strong team to take on the man who now holds Goldie, and his Undisputed Era brethren.

Balor could join the team just to send a message to the entire locker room that he is not with anyone, and against everyone, and wants to prove that by defeating The Undisputed Era too. Balor’s inclusion into the babyface team could make this much more interesting, and keep the door to a betrayal open throughout the match.

#1 Team NXT - Survivor Series

NXT is going to war with the main roster, and unlike RAW and SmackDown, this will be their first outing in the big leagues. With such a historic pay-per-view set, NXT will try to make the biggest impression possible to leave a mark on the company and the WWE Universe.

During the recent invasion angles from NXT, we have not seen Finn Balor yet. The reason for that could be as simple as Balor already belonging to the main roster for a long time, and the company wants fresh stars to feature from NXT at Survivor Series.

However, an injury to Gargano could result in the company adding Balor to the mix for Survivor Series, in order to make the NXT team as strong as possible. No one knows the main roster teams like Finn Balor does, and he could do extremely well for Team NXT at the event.

Finn Balor could be named the captain of NXT and instantly lift the value of the entire team. Currently, it seems like Adam Cole will be taking the reins of Team Black & Gold for the event, but Balor’s inclusion could also lead to a rift among the team, causing them to implode at the event, handing the victory to one of the main roster teams.
