5 Big mistakes WWE made at Clash of Champions 2019: 2-Time WWE Champion misses main show, Bad finish to grudge match

Clash of Champions 2019 was a bit of an underwhelming PPV, to say the least. Obviously, we're going to get into the details as to why, but the good news is that it ended in a great way, with Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman putting on a fantastic main event and The Fiend's appearance at the very end to top it all off.

While that might change the overall perception of the PPV, the reality is that it ended WWE's string of good PPVs. They had a good streak running, with Stomping Grounds, Extreme Rules and SummerSlam all being solid shows. So far, only Fastlane, Super ShowDown and Clash of Champions have been underwhelming shows. Still, the direction in itself is quite exciting, with Hell in a Cell 2019 set to feature brand new match-ups and big twists in ongoing storylines.

Here are a few mistakes that WWE made at the PPV.

#5 Bad placement of matches

WWE could have done a lot better with the way the matches were placed on the show. While we do understand that it can often be a difficult task, they've put on enough PPV cards to know which matches are supposed to go at what time and the reasons why they're placed where they are.

WrestleMania was a good example of this, as there were three matches that fans cared about the most - the Universal Championship match, the WWE Championship match and the RAW Women's Championship match. They started with the Universal Title bout, got to the WWE Title bout after the midway point and ended on a high note.

At Clash of Champions, this wasn't the case at all as matches were placed oddly and it resulted in very poor crowd reactions.

#4 Not having the King of the Ring final on the show

Can Chad Gable become King Gable?
Can Chad Gable become King Gable?

Chad Gable is all set to face Baron Corbin in the King of the Ring finals this coming episode of RAW. It was originally scheduled to be at Clash of Champions, but WWE seemingly decided that it would be better for the finals to have its own showcase on free television.

While we do understand that point of view, we also firmly believe that it would have been a match that would be better suited to a PPV. Firstly, there would naturally be interest since it's the KOTR finals. Secondly, Gable would get his showcase and it would be a match where the crowd was actually invested in.

You can count the number of matches the crowd was invested in on one hand and that just shows what was lacking on the show. It really needed strong reactions and the story of Chad Gable in the finals is one that people are truly invested in. WWE should have put the finals on PPV rather than free TV.

#3 The entire booking of the WWE Title match

Kofi Kingston's momentum may have stalled with the underwhelming match-up
Kofi Kingston's momentum may have stalled with the underwhelming match-up

It's safe to assume that Kofi Kingston vs Randy Orton was the dud of the night. Apart from just the bad placement of it, the overall booking of the match simply didn't do any favors to the crowd. They were already getting spent at that point and it felt like the WWE Championship match was their break, because they stopped reacting entirely.

As a performer, that's one of the worst things that can happen during a match and it certainly did nothing to further Kofi Kingston's WWE Title reign as hoped. Sure, the right person went over, but for a story that's 10 years in the making, the match certainly didn't feel like it.

They could have easily added a stipulation to make things more intense, but they chose to make it a generic singles match. Apart from just that, the match went on for far too long and the crowd seemed mute at one point. Hopefully, this rivalry is put to rest and Kofi Kingston can face a more exciting challenger at Hell in a Cell.

#2 AJ Styles on the Kickoff show

A J Styles on the kickoff show was a random decision

This was definitely one of those decisions that was taken at the last minute. AJ Styles vs Cedric Alexander for the United States Championship was shockingly put on the Kickoff show.

While we would understand the perspective that putting AJ Styles on the Kickoff show would draw more viewers, they didn't announce it early enough and it came as quite a surprise. Naturally, the two men were restricted in what they could do due to a 10-minute space, but it's obvious that this would have been a more memorable match on the show. It could have served as an opening bout, an early bout or even one in the middle of the crowd to get them hot again.

What's clear is that AJ Styles should not be wrestling on the Kickoff show. He's been doing really good with the United States Championship so far and it doesn't seem like he'll be losing it anytime soon. Hopefully, for the next PPV Hell in a Cell 2019, Styles will be featured on the main card.

#1 Underwhelming finish to an incredible match

Becky Lynch was ruthless
Becky Lynch was ruthless

Becky Lynch vs Sasha Banks was undoubtedly the second-best match on the night, only behind the incredible main event. The two Horsewomen went to war and proved that in the 3-4 years where they haven't battled, their chemistry hasn't vanished a bit.

They took each other to the limit and the crowd was really into it as Becky not only accidentally struck the referee with a steel chair, but the brawl went into the crowd and the concession stands as well.

All of it was going well until the confusing finish. A backstage agent and multiple referees tried to forcefully remove Becky Lynch from the steel chair, which she was also using as leverage to break Sasha Banks' arm.

It was then revealed that Becky Lynch was disqualified and she raised her title as though she won the match. While a dusty finish to extend the feud was the best call, the manner in which they did it was rather underwhelming. It certainly deserved a better finish. With that said, we do hope that this leads to a clash inside Hell in a Cell, where Banks finally captures the title again.
