5 Biggest news stories from WWE Extreme Rules 2020

What a bizarre main event!
What a bizarre main event!

From Rey Mysterio almost losing an eye to a strange main event between Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt, WWE Extreme Rules 2020 featured many contrasting moments.

Whether you loved or hated this Pay-Per-View, Extreme Rules was definitely an eventful show. Just because of its sheer ridiculousness, I would suggest you watch The Horror Show at Extreme Rules to make up your own mind.

What are your thoughts on this year's Extreme Rules Pay-Per-View? Leave your opinions in the comments section below.

Here are the five biggest news stories from WWE Extreme Rules 2020.

#5: Sasha Banks stole Asuka's RAW Women's Championship in a confusing finish to a potentially excellent match

Sasha Banks and Asuka fought a great battle at WWE Extreme Rules. It could have certainly been one of the best matches of 2020, but the ending has left the WWE Universe confused in both good and bad ways.

As Asuka geared up to spray the mist on Sasha's face, a poor WWE referee got misted in this situation. Meanwhile, Bayley wore the official referee's shirt and made a successful three-count when her best friend pinned Asuka.

Officially, Asuka is still the RAW Women's Champion. But things have considerably changed as Bayley & Sasha Banks fleed the arena with Asuka's rightful title.

Whether you liked this finish or not, fans do look for closure whenever WWE introduces a brand-new twist out of nowhere. Asuka was the favorite going into this match, and out of each and every possible finish, nobody expected the bout to end the way it did at Extreme Rules.

Perhaps we may get a definite resolution on the upcoming episode of WWE RAW, or this was just another cheap way to extend Sasha and Asuka's feud till SummerSlam.

Whatever the case may be, The Golden Role Models have been one of the best WWE acts in recent memory.

#4: Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio's unnerving "Eye for an Eye" Match ended in a cop-out

Out of all the bizarre stipulation matches we have witnessed in WWE over the years, Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio's "Eye for an Eye" Match had the potential to top them all.

As I've mentioned many times before, it was strange to think how WWE would visualize a Superstar literally extracting their opponent's eye. To keep it short, that's not really how it ended during The Horror Show at Extreme Rules.

Rollins drove Mysterio's eye towards the ring steps, just like he had done several weeks ago on WWE RAW. The match ended right there, and Rollins threw up near ringside after the reprehensible act he had just committed.

Truth be told, this bout wasn't a disaster many were hoping it would be. There was a strange and unnerving tone throughout the entire match, simply because we were all waiting for either of the two WWE Superstars to extract his opponent's eye.

But the finish was underwhelming and judging by WWE's past history, Rey Mysterio probably won't go completely blind anytime soon.

#3: Drew McIntyre beat Dolph Ziggler despite fighting against a one-sided Extreme Rules stipulation

Before we go any further, I must say that it feels good to have a dominant WWE Champion who isn't Brock Lesnar.

After WrestleMania 36, Drew McIntyre has been the favorite heading into most of his WWE title matches, and the same can be said for McIntyre's Extreme Rules bout against Dolph Ziggler this year.

Leading up to the event, McIntyre physically dominated Ziggler in every way possible, and the only advantage that The ShowOff had was the secret stipulation that was revealed at Extreme Rules.

For those disappointed about the fact that no specific Extreme Rules stipulation matches were announced for the Pay-Per-View, Ziggler's secret stipulation was an Extreme Rules Match that only favored The ShowOff last night.

Unlike his opponent, McIntyre had to fight via normal rules to retain his WWE Championship, and yet, he managed to overcome Ziggler's threat with a devastating Claymore.

Apart from Bobby Lashley or maybe Randy Orton as potential future opponents, it doesn't look like Drew McIntyre's path as the WWE Champion is going to come to a screeching halt anytime soon.

#2: Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura became the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions

WWE Extreme Rules opened with a fun tag team contest between The New Day and the team of Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura. The SmackDown Tag Team Titles were on the line, and thanks to Cesaro's victory during last week's episode of WWE SmackDown, a Tables Match stipulation was set for The Horror Show at Extreme Rules.

This advantage definitely paid off for the new Champions, as Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura reversed the tables and put Kofi through an actual table to become the SmackDown Tag Team Champions.

Poor Kofi went through two tables, while Cesaro & Nakamura celebrated their rightful victory at WWE Extreme Rules. Cesaro & Nakamura have a fanbase that always wanted WWE to recognize the duo's talent and push them to the top of the company's Tag Team Division.

Moreover, the title change felt necessary at this stage. Kofi & Big E have been the SmackDown Tag Team Champions several times, and as of now, WWE hasn't done anything extraordinary with their male tag team talents.

So Cesaro & Nakamura's victory during The Horror Show at Extreme Rules not only gives them a fresh start, but it also gives us hope for a less "horrifying" future as far as SmackDown's Tag Team Division is concerned.

#1: Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman fought in an extremely polarizing and completely bizarre main event

WWE's "Wyatt Swamp Fight" has attracted positive and negative criticism from all kinds of Pro-Wrestling fans. Many writers here at Sportskeeda also have different opinions on this match.

Anybody who has been following my articles knows that I am a huge Bray Wyatt fan, so if there is a target consumer WWE had in mind while airing this match, it would definitely be me.

As an avid fan of the horror genre, I couldn't care less about the company's generic attempt at "scaring" their audience through this Pay-Per-View, but the reason why I loved The Wyatt Swamp Fight is that it was layered with symbolism and easter eggs throughout its entirety.

Some events in this bout have been misinterpreted by the audience, especially when it comes to the appearance of Alexa Bliss who was compared to Sister Abigail, which would never be the case in reality since it has already been established that Sister Abigail died a long time ago.

If The Firefly Fun House was a trip through John Cena's mind, then The Wyatt Swamp Fight did the same for Braun Strowman, which would explain why The Monster Among Men projected Bliss as Sister Abigail in his own mind.

On the WWE SmackDown episode before Extreme Rules, Wyatt wasn't lying when he said that the swamp was literally buried with everything that represents pure evil since The Eater of Worlds drowned in the swamp to reveal a bigger evil, whom WWE fans refer to as The Fiend.
